CV Format for Sri Lanka: Standard Sri Lankan CV Samples and Free Templates

A standard Sri Lankan CV runs two to three pages, lists G.C.E. A/L with stream and Z-score alongside O/L grades, puts CIMA and CA Sri Lanka progress in its own block, and closes with two named non-related referees and a signature. Qarera's free Sri Lanka templates parse cleanly through the topjobs.lk and XpressJobs parsers and through Workday and SuccessFactors at the listed groups and the Big Four.

LKR metrics · A/L, O/L, NIC and CIMA fields built in · Non-related referee block included

The short answer

The standard CV format in Sri Lanka is a two-page, single-column document in this order: contact details, personal details, career objective, professional qualifications, education with G.C.E. A/L and O/L results, work experience, skills with proficiency levels, extra-curricular activities, and two non-related referees, closing with a certification sentence and signature. In finance the qualifications block moves above education. One page is right only for the Colombo tech segment.

You will see the same document called a Sri Lankan CV format, a Sri Lanka CV template, a curriculum vitae format in Sri Lanka, or a bio data - and for the job CV format Sri Lanka employers expect, they all mean this. Unlike some neighbouring markets, the bio data format Sri Lanka uses refers to the job CV, not a marriage document. Search for a CV sample Sri Lanka recruiters actually shortlist and you will mostly turn up restyled Word files; what decides the outcome is which fields are on the page, not the styling.

People searching for the latest CV format in Sri Lanka, or a new CV format in Sri Lanka, are usually looking for the wrong thing. There is no prescribed new format; what has actually changed is that the NIC, date of birth and civil status are increasingly left off circulated CVs and given on request. The core has not moved.

Sri Lankan CV formats by sector

Each is a two-to-three-page CV template Sri Lanka employers recognise. Pick by sector - fresh graduate, accounting and finance, IT, apparel, banking, or Gulf and overseas - because the right CV format for job applications in Sri Lanka genuinely differs between them.

Fresh Graduate / School Leaver (LK)

Best for: A/L school leavers and graduates of Colombo, Peradeniya, Moratuwa, Sri Jayewardenepura, Kelaniya and Ruhuna, plus SLIIT, NSBM, NIBM and APIIT

Structure: Contact → Personal Details → Career Objective → Education (A/L with stream and Z-score, O/L with grades) → Professional Qualifications → Internship → Skills → Extra-Curricular → Non-Related Referees

With little work history, your G.C.E. results carry the CV. Write A/L properly - stream, subject grades, Z-score and district rank if strong - and write O/L in the local shorthand ("8A's and 1B, including English and Mathematics"). Sri Lankan recruiters read these fluently and a vague "passed A/Ls" wastes the strongest evidence you have. Add your internship and any part-qualification (AAT, CIMA Operational) because those move you ahead of classmates with identical degrees.

Accounting & Finance (CIMA / CA Sri Lanka)

Best for: Audit, management accounting, treasury and finance roles at the Big Four, listed groups, and finance shared-service centres in Colombo

Structure: Contact → Personal Details → Career Objective → Professional Qualifications (first) → Education → Work Experience → Skills → Non-Related Referees

Sri Lanka is unusually qualification-dense in finance, and CIMA, CA Sri Lanka, ACCA and AAT function as the primary screen - job adverts on topjobs.lk are frequently written as "part or fully qualified in CA Sri Lanka / CIMA / ACCA". Put the qualifications block above education and state your exact position: "CIMA Passed Finalist, 2024", "CA Sri Lanka - Corporate Level", "AAT Passed Finalist". Generic "studying CIMA" loses to a candidate who names the level and sitting.

IT & Tech (Colombo)

Best for: Software engineers, QA, data and product roles at WSO2, IFS, Virtusa, 99X, Sysco LABS, MillenniumIT and the remote-first employers hiring out of Sri Lanka

Structure: Contact → Professional Summary → Technical Skills → Work Experience → Projects → Education → Certifications → GitHub / Portfolio

This is the segment that has moved to the Western resume: no personal details, no NIC, no photo, no declaration, and one to two pages. Lead with the stack for keyword matching and put GitHub and a portfolio link in the contact line. Many of these roles are effectively international - Sri Lanka has a large offshore engineering base - so write for a reader who does not know your university and convert LKR figures where relevant. BCS and AWS certifications carry weight locally.

Apparel & Manufacturing

Best for: Merchandising, production, IE, quality, planning and compliance roles at MAS Holdings, Brandix, Hirdaramani, Hela and the export manufacturers

Structure: Contact → Personal Details → Career Objective → Work Experience (with buyer, product and volume) → Education → Training (compliance / lean) → Skills → Non-Related Referees

Apparel is Sri Lanka's largest manufactured export and its CVs read on specifics: buyer accounts (Victoria's Secret, Nike, Marks & Spencer, Calvin Klein, lululemon, Decathlon), product category (intimates, activewear, knit, woven), monthly volume and FOB value, and lean or compliance credentials. Sri Lanka competes on compliance and ethical manufacturing rather than lowest cost, so audit exposure and sustainability certifications are genuine differentiators here, not padding.

Banking, Insurance & NBFI

Best for: Management trainee and executive roles at Commercial Bank, Sampath, HNB, NDB, Seylan, LOLC, and the insurance and finance companies

Structure: Contact → Personal Details → Career Objective → Education → Professional Qualifications (CIMA, CA, IBSL, CFA) → Work Experience → Skills → Non-Related Referees

Banking management trainee schemes screen on degree class, A/L results and professional progress together, and many still ask for A/L and O/L on the application form regardless of your degree. Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka (IBSL) qualifications, CIMA and CFA levels all carry weight. Quantify in LKR - portfolio size, deposit growth, NPL movement, branch targets - because "handled customer accounts" without a number is the most common weakness at this level.

Overseas & Gulf Employment

Best for: Applicants targeting the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Oman, including SLBFE-registered placements and direct applications to Gulf employers

Structure: Contact → Personal Details (with nationality, passport, visa status) → Professional Summary → Work Experience → Education → Certifications → Languages → Referees

A very large share of Sri Lankan job-seeking is outbound to the Gulf, and the format shifts. Gulf employers expect nationality, passport number or expiry, visa or NOC status, and a photo - the opposite of UK and Australian advice. State availability and notice period plainly, list any GCC experience prominently, and give equivalence for local qualifications a Gulf recruiter may not recognise. Where you are going through the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment, keep your documentation names consistent with your passport exactly.

Personal details and results: what to include

Sri Lankan practice is genuinely in transition on some of these fields and firmly settled on others. Here is the field-by-field position.

NIC number

This is the field Sri Lankan practice has moved on most. Traditional employers, government posts and many application forms still expect it, but current professional guidance is to leave it off a CV you circulate and provide it when asked. There is a practical reason beyond privacy: the Sri Lankan NIC encodes your date of birth and, in the older format, your gender - so publishing it hands over more than a reference number. Keep it for government and prescribed forms; drop it for topjobs.lk applications and anything you email widely.

Date of birth and civil status

Conventional on a Sri Lankan CV and still expected at traditional employers and in the public sector, but increasingly dropped in the corporate and tech segments where they add no signal. These are the first two fields to cut if you need space. If a job advert or application form asks for them, provide them - the risk is omitting something explicitly requested, not including something conventional.

Photograph

Expected for local roles across most sectors, and dropped by tech firms, foreign-affiliated companies and startups. One useful detail: topjobs.lk lets you upload a photograph and certificates alongside the CV as separate attachments, so for those applications the photo does not need to sit on the document itself. Where you do include one, use a plain-background formal headshot.

G.C.E. A/L results

Keep these for longer than you would expect - Sri Lankan recruiters read A/L results fluently and management trainee schemes at the banks and conglomerates often ask for them regardless of your degree. Write the stream (Bio Science, Physical Science, Commerce, Arts), the subject grades, and the Z-score with district rank if it was strong. "Passed A/Ls" throws away your best evidence when you are early in your career.

G.C.E. O/L results

List them in the local shorthand - "8A's and 1B, including English Language and Mathematics" - which every Sri Lankan recruiter parses instantly. English and Mathematics credits in particular are checked for a wide range of roles. You can compress this to a single line once you have several years of experience, and drop it entirely in the tech segment.

Professional qualification level

State the exact position rather than the intent. "CIMA - Passed Finalist, 2024", "CA Sri Lanka - Corporate Level", "AAT Sri Lanka - Passed Finalist" and "ACCA - 9 of 13 papers" all tell a recruiter precisely where you are and when you qualify. "Studying CIMA" does not, and in a market this qualification-dense it puts you behind candidates who were specific.

Non-related referees

Sri Lankan convention is explicit that referees must be non-related - a former employer, supervisor, or academic staff member from your university, never a family member. Name two with designation, organisation and contact details. Ask them first and tell them which roles you are applying for; Sri Lankan hiring runs on personal networks and referees do get called.

Writing tips for Sri Lankan CVs

Six things that separate a professional CV format Sri Lanka recruiters shortlist from the simple CV format Sri Lanka job seekers usually send. CV writing in Sri Lanka rewards precision about qualifications more than anything else.

Name your qualification level exactly

This is the highest-leverage line on a Sri Lankan CV. "CIMA - Passed Finalist, 2024", "CA Sri Lanka - Corporate Level (Business Level completed 2021)", "ACCA - 9 of 13 papers passed", "AAT Sri Lanka - Passed Finalist" each tell a recruiter exactly where you are and when you will qualify. "Studying CIMA" tells them nothing and, in a market where adverts are literally written as "part or fully qualified in CA Sri Lanka / CIMA / ACCA", it puts you behind people with identical progress who were specific.

Write A/L and O/L the way recruiters read them

A/L: stream, subject grades, Z-score, and district rank if it was strong. O/L: the local shorthand, "8A's and 1B, including English Language and Mathematics". These are not schoolboy details in Sri Lanka - management trainee schemes at the banks and conglomerates ask for them regardless of your degree, and English and Mathematics credits are specifically checked. Keep them for the first several years of your career.

Use non-related referees, and name them

Sri Lankan convention is explicit that referees must be non-related: a former employer, supervisor or university academic, never a family member. Name two with designation, organisation, phone and email rather than "available on request" - hiring here runs on personal networks and referees genuinely get called at shortlist stage. Brief them before you apply. A referee taken by surprise is worse than no referee at all.

Quantify in LKR and give scale a reference point

Use LKR explicitly and write the unit out - "LKR 4.2 billion" rather than "4.2bn" - and add a USD approximation when the CV may go to a Gulf or international employer. Portfolio size, revenue managed, close timelines, headcount, order volume and audit findings are what differentiate. "Handled customer accounts" without a number is the most common weakness in Sri Lankan CVs and the easiest thing to fix.

State your language proficiency honestly and specifically

Give Sinhala, Tamil and English each a proficiency level rather than listing them flat. Genuine trilingual ability is a real differentiator for customer-facing, public-sector, island-wide and Gulf-bound roles, and it is worth stating precisely - "Sinhala native, English fluent written and spoken, Tamil conversational" is far more useful to a recruiter than three words on one line. Do not inflate: these get tested at interview.

Match the segment, not the job title

Sri Lanka runs two live CV conventions at once. Listed groups, banks, the Big Four, apparel, government and traditional employers expect the full format: personal details, both sets of G.C.E. results, qualifications block, non-related referees, signature, two to three pages. The Colombo tech firms and foreign-affiliated employers - WSO2, IFS, Virtusa, 99X, Sysco LABS - have moved to the Western resume, and the full block works against you there. Decide which document you are writing first, and keep both.

Applying abroad from Sri Lanka

The Gulf is by far the largest destination for Sri Lankan job seekers, and it is the one place where you keep the fuller format and add to it - nationality, passport, visa or NOC status and a photo are all expected. For the English-speaking West it is the opposite: strip the personal details, NIC, photo and G.C.E. blocks entirely, because those fields can count against you there.
