Accountant Resume: Examples, Certifications, and Free Template
Accountant resumes get screened by controllers and CFOs who can spot inflation in seconds. They want CPA status (or progress toward it), the ERP you've actually closed in, and bullets that tie to the close calendar. Anything else is filler.

What controllers screen accountant resumes for
Hiring controllers look at a stack of accountant resumes for the same three things every time: CPA status (active, in progress, or not pursuing), the ERP you've closed in, and the size of the books you've owned. If those answers aren't visible in the first half of page one, the controller assumes the candidate is hiding something.
The second filter is the close. "Owned month-end close in NetSuite for a $40M ARR company; cut close from 9 days to 5 over two quarters by automating intercompany journal entries" tells the controller you understand the rhythm of accounting work. "Performed monthly close activities" tells them nothing.
The third filter is segmentation. Public accounting (audit, tax, advisory at a Big 4 or regional firm) and industry accounting (corporate accounting, FP&A, controllership) are different career tracks. Resumes that don't make the segmentation clear get routed to the wrong piles. If you're moving from public to industry, name it explicitly in the summary.
What doesn't move the screen: "detail-oriented," "strong analytical skills," "team player." Every accountant resume claims these. Replace each with a bullet that proves it under audit pressure or close pressure.

What to include on an accountant resume
Contact + credential. Name, phone, email, city. Add CPA or relevant credential after your name in the header (e.g., "Jane Doe, CPA"). If you're a CPA candidate, mention status ("CPA candidate, 3/4 sections passed").
Professional Summary (3-4 lines). Years of experience, function (audit, tax, corporate, FP&A), and the ERP you close in. "CPA with 6 years split between Big 4 audit and Series B SaaS controllership; ran monthly and quarterly close in NetSuite for a $40M ARR company" beats "experienced accounting professional."
Certifications & Licenses. CPA (state and number if active), CMA, EA, CIA, CFE. List exam status if in progress.
Experience. Reverse chronological. Company, title, dates, books size. Lead each role with one specific outcome (close cycle reduction, audit clean-up, system migration, headcount you trained). Then bullets covering close, reconciliation, audit support, technical accounting, and any process improvement.
Education. Degree, university, graduation year, major (Accounting, Finance). Drop GPA after 3 years out unless 3.7+. Master's in Accounting or MBA goes here.
Technical skills. ERP by name (NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Workday Financials, QuickBooks, Sage Intacct), close tools (Blackline, FloQast), reporting tools (Excel, Power BI, Tableau, Looker), tax software if relevant (CCH Axcess, Thomson Reuters).

ATS keywords for accountant resumes
These are the terms applicant tracking systems are tuned to find on a accountant resume. Embed them naturally in your bullets and skills section - don't list them as a flat keyword wall.
Sample accountant resume bullets
Use these as a model - replace the numbers and contexts with your own. Every bullet leads with a quantified outcome, not a duty.
- 1

Recommended resume structure
Section order matters. ATS systems and human screeners both expect this layout for accountant resumes.
- 1Contact + Credential

- 5Technical Skills
- 6Education
Put Certifications above Experience for early-career CPAs and CPA candidates; the credential is the screen. For senior accounting roles (controller, director), Experience leads. Always name the ERP in the summary line, not buried in the Skills section.

Common mistakes on accountant resumes
CPA status not visible in the header
Active CPA goes after your name. CPA candidates put status in the summary line. Burying credential information forces the controller to search, and they often won't.
Listing journal-entry duties without size
"Prepared journal entries and reconciliations" is duty language. Pair it with size: "Owned 80+ monthly recurring journal entries and 40 balance-sheet reconciliations across a $40M ARR books closing in NetSuite."
Vague ERP description
"Experience with various accounting software" reads as inflated. List the specific systems by name. Controllers filter for stack overlap.
No close-cycle metrics
Close cycle (in business days) is one of the most-tracked accounting KPIs. If you reduced close from 9 days to 5, name it. If you maintained a 5-day close through a system migration, name that too.
Not naming the audit firm
Big 4 audit experience is a credibility signal even years later. If you came up through a Big 4 (or strong regional firm like Grant Thornton, BDO, RSM, Crowe), name the firm and your specialization (audit, tax, advisory).
Generic 'GAAP knowledge' line
Every accountant claims GAAP knowledge. Replace with a specific technical accounting moment: ASC 606 revenue recognition implementation, lease accounting under ASC 842, stock-based compensation under ASC 718.
