What to include on an accountant resume

Most “accounting skills” lists are somebody’s opinion. This one is a count. We read the 3,259 live accountant and accounting postings indexed on Qarera and counted how often each skill is named, then compared each against how often it appears across all 374,306 live postings we hold — because a skill every job asks for tells you nothing about this one. The headline: IFRS (15.9%) and US GAAP (13.3%) are almost neck and neck, so the reporting standard you name is the first thing that sorts you into or out of a shortlist. Tick what you can genuinely evidence and we will carry it into the builder.

Based on 3,259 live accountant postings on Qarera (997 United States, 437 India, 181 the Philippines, 173 the United Kingdom, then the Netherlands, Germany, Canada, Ireland and Australia), measured 25 August 2026.

• Financial reporting25.7%

  The most-requested specific skill, and 31x more common here than in an average posting. Say what you actually produced and for whom — “monthly consolidated pack for 4 entities”, “quarterly statements reviewed by external audit” — not the phrase on its own.

• Excel21%

  Everyone lists it, so the word alone is worthless. Name the functions: pivot tables are called out by name in 3.1% of postings and VLOOKUP in 1.5%. “Rebuilt the flux file in Power Query, cut prep from 6 hours to 40 minutes” beats “advanced Excel”.

• Tax19%

  Specify which tax and which jurisdiction — corporate, indirect, partnership, payroll — because the regional split is wide: VAT appears in 6.1% of postings, GST in 3.5%, TDS in 1.6%. “Tax” unqualified reads as a gap.

• IFRS15.9%

  Slightly ahead of US GAAP across our index, which surprises most candidates. If you have worked under both, say so on line one of your technical skills — dual-standard experience is scarce and IFRS-to-GAAP conversion work is named explicitly in postings.

• SAP15.7%

  The most-named ERP by a wide margin. Give the module and your depth — SAP FI/CO, S/4HANA — rather than the bare product name, and say whether you configured it or operated it.

• US GAAP13.3%

  Name the standards you have actually applied rather than the framework in the abstract. ASC 606 is called out by name in 3.4% of postings and ASC 842 in 1.4% of description text — quoting one is far more convincing than “strong GAAP knowledge”.

• CPA licence (or local equivalent)13.3%

  State your exact status, including part-qualified: “CPA candidate — 3 of 4 sections passed, FAR remaining” is a stronger line than silence. Put it above experience, since it is often the first screen.

• Accounts payable8.8%

  Quantify the throughput and the improvement, not the duty. “1,400 invoices/month across 3 entities, cut duplicate payments to zero after a 3-way match rebuild” is a result; “processed invoices” is a job description.

• NetSuite8.2%

  20x more common here than in an average posting, and the ERP of choice for mid-market and SaaS finance teams. Worth its own line if you have it — it filters strongly.

• General ledger6.9%

  Pair it with scale: how many entities, currencies and intercompany relationships you owned. Multi-entity and multi-currency GL ownership is what separates two otherwise identical resumes.

• Internal controls6.7%

  Describe a control you designed or remediated and what it prevented, with the audit outcome attached — “closed 3 of 4 prior-year control deficiencies; clean opinion”. Naming the framework alone proves nothing.

• Revenue recognition6.6%

  The specific ask hiding inside “GAAP knowledge”, and the one most often tested at interview. ASC 606 appears by name in a further 3.4% of postings; if you have handled multi-element or subscription arrangements, say which.

• Fund accounting6.3%

  51x more common here than in an average posting — the sharpest specialism in this dataset, and one no generic skills list carries. It spans hedge fund and private-equity administration and US nonprofit fund accounting; name which, and the fund structures you have handled.

• VAT6.1%

  The clearest sign a posting is European or UK. If you have filed returns, say the jurisdictions and the frequency; cross-border VAT and reverse-charge experience is a genuine differentiator for EU roles.

• SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley) compliance5.6%

  Effectively a US public-company marker — it tells you the employer is listed or heading there. Name your role in the cycle: walkthroughs, narratives, testing, remediation, or PMO.

• Public accounting / Big 4 background4.9%

  Postings ask for firm-side experience directly, and “Big 4” is named in a further 3.7%. If you trained in practice, say the firm and the client sizes; if you did not, lead with the audit you have supported from the company side instead.

• Month-end close2.9%

  Under-counted here — the phrase appears in 13.3% of raw description text (see the note below). Give the number of days and your slice of it: “day-3 close, owned 14 accruals and the intercompany elimination”.

• Technical accounting memos1.9%

  Rare in postings but a real senior deliverable: position papers researching non-routine transactions and defending the conclusion to external auditors. If you have written one, name the issue — it signals a level nothing else on a resume does.

Counted on 25 August 2026 across 3,259 live postings whose title contains “accountant” or “accounting”, against a baseline of all 374,306 live postings indexed on Qarera. Percentages are real counts over those 3,259 postings, not estimates. This is a curated list of the most-requested specific skills; it is not a ranked leaderboard of every term we found, and terms were dropped for the reasons below. Skills were ranked by how much more often they appear here than across the whole index, not by raw frequency — otherwise the list fills with words every job uses. “Communication” appears in 34.4% of accountant postings but 32.6% of all postings, so it is noise, not a finding; “leadership” (15.6% here, 16.2% everywhere) is the same. Notably, an accounting posting is slightly less likely than an average job to mention AI — 12.3% against 16.9% across the index — so a resume built around AI tooling is answering a question this market is not yet asking. Those terms still belong on a resume; they are just not evidence of what this role wants. Excluded: the role name restated (“accounting” 77.1%, “finance” 39.0%) and terms that turned out to be boilerplate once we read the sentences they appear in — “recruitment” (7.2%) is almost entirely application-process text, and “legal” (6.8%) is mostly work-authorisation and benefits copy. Nothing is summed. Where one idea is split across several terms — excel / microsoft excel / advanced excel, gaap / us gaap / u.s. gaap, analytical / analytical skills, reconciliation / reconciliations — we report one term’s own percentage under one label rather than adding them, because a single posting can contain all of them. IFRS and US GAAP are counted separately and deliberately: the near-tie between them is the finding. One known limit, measured separately and on a looser basis: our skill extractor matches a fixed vocabulary, and it under-reads qualifications and close vocabulary. Searching the raw description text instead finds ACCA in 11.9% of these postings, CIMA in 4.2% and “chartered accountant” in 3.8% — none of which carry a proper token — and “month-end close” in 13.3% against the 2.9% recorded above. Statutory audit reaches 3.4% and BlackLine 2.6% on the same basis. Text counts always read higher than the counts in the table, so we keep the two apart rather than mixing them; treat these as a floor for how often those qualifications are really wanted, and spell out ACCA, CIMA or CA in full on your resume, since the systems reading it may not recognise the acronym.
