This is the part of a Kenyan CV that has no equivalent anywhere else, and the part international templates leave out entirely. Public-service adverts list these explicitly and reject applications that omit them.
Certificate of Good Conduct
Issued by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and required for most formal job applications in Kenya - effectively mandatory for public service, banking, driving, security and anything involving children or money. It takes time to process, so apply before you need it rather than after an offer. On the CV, state it with the issue date and validity ("issued Jan 2026, valid to Jan 2027") rather than writing "available on request".
HELB compliance
If you took a Higher Education Loans Board loan, employers - particularly in the public sector - check that you are servicing or have cleared it. A HELB Compliance Certificate is a standard requirement on public-service applications and is requested by many private employers at offer stage. State your position plainly: "fully cleared" or "compliant, servicing on schedule".
CRB clearance
A credit reference bureau certificate from Metropol, TransUnion or Creditinfo. It is standard for banking, finance and any role handling money, and increasingly requested more broadly. If your record is clear, saying so on the CV is a small positive signal for finance roles. If it is not clear, do not state it - resolve it first, because it will surface at offer stage.
EACC self-declaration
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission self-declaration form is part of Chapter Six compliance and is required for public service and state corporation applications. It is completed as a form rather than issued as a certificate, so on the CV simply note that it is available or completed. Public-sector adverts list it explicitly and applications get rejected for leaving it out.
KRA PIN and tax compliance
A KRA PIN is required for employment and a Tax Compliance Certificate is requested on public-sector and many corporate applications. Note it as registered and compliant. A TCC is valid for a limited period, so check yours is current before you start applying rather than scrambling for it during onboarding.
Professional body membership
Named precisely with your level: CPA(K) and ICPAK membership for accounting, ACCA, CIFA and AKIB in finance, EBK registration for engineers, LSK for advocates, IHRM for HR, CIPS for procurement, and the relevant regulatory council for health roles. Give your section or completion year rather than "pursuing CPA" - the specific version is what recruiters in these fields scan for and it is a stronger signal for identical progress.
Referees
Two to three named referees with designation, organisation, phone number and email. References carry real weight in Kenyan hiring and are genuinely called at shortlist stage, so a named list moves you forward while "available on request" adds a delay. Use former supervisors or university academics, never family, and brief them before you start applying.

Sort your clearances before you start applying, not after
The Certificate of Good Conduct takes time to process through the DCI, and an offer can genuinely stall waiting for it. The same goes for a HELB Compliance Certificate, a CRB report and a current Tax Compliance Certificate. Get them in hand, then state them on the CV with dates and status. Candidates who can say "Good Conduct issued Jan 2026, valid to Jan 2027; HELB fully cleared" are easier to hire than equally qualified candidates who cannot.
Write the degree class and KCSE mean grade in full
Use "Second Class Honours (Upper Division)" rather than "2:1", and the standard KCSE notation "Mean Grade B+ (plus)" with the school and year. Kenyan recruiters and public-service adverts both work off these directly, and many set explicit minimums. Abbreviating or omitting them makes a screener guess, and screeners under volume do not guess in your favour.
Treat attachment as real experience
Attachment is the Kenyan word for an internship, and for a first job it is usually the only work experience you have. Give the organisation, department, exact dates and three or four bullets on what you produced, with numbers - records processed, reports prepared, customers served, systems used. "Industrial attachment, three months" throws away your strongest evidence. Give it its own section rather than a line under education.
Name counties, donors and figures for NGO and field roles

State professional membership with its level
"CPA(K) - completed 2024, ICPAK member" and "CPA Section 4 completed, Section 5 in progress" both say precisely where you are. "Pursuing CPA" says nothing and loses to identical candidates who were specific. Same across the professions - EBK for engineers, LSK for advocates, IHRM for HR, CIPS for procurement, CIFA and AKIB in finance. Name the body as well as the qualification, because membership status gets verified.
Keep it single-column, table-free, and drop the photo
Safaricom, the banks, the multinationals and the UN agencies run Workday, SuccessFactors and Taleo, and BrighterMonday, Fuzu and MyJobMag parse uploads with their own parsers. Tables, columns and text boxes are what most often cause a parser to drop content silently - a two-column "modern" CV can lose your whole work history invisibly. Kenya also does not use CV photos, so a template with a photo block is a template built for a different market.
Applying abroad from Kenya
If you are applying overseas, do not send the Kenyan format. The clearance stack and KCSE block are not understood outside Kenya and read as clutter, and the UK, Ireland, Canada and Australia actively discourage personal details and photos.
