Open the South African CV BuilderHow to state work authorization
Goes in personal details at the top. For SA, EE candidate declaration and Critical Skills Visa status are both relevant.
South African Citizen
List nationality. Equity status (Black African / Coloured / Indian / White) often declared for EE-relevant roles per the Employment Equity Act. State plainly — South African hiring is openly equity-aware.
Permanent Resident
State as "Permanent Resident — no work visa required". Treated equivalently to citizens for most roles, but not for EE candidate purposes.
Critical Skills Work Visa
For occupations on the Critical Skills List (Department of Home Affairs) — most tech, engineering, finance, healthcare, academic roles. State as "Critical Skills Work Visa (current)" or "Eligible for Critical Skills Work Visa (M.Sc. + SAQA evaluation complete)".
General Work Visa
For non-Critical Skills occupations. Labour market test required. State as "General Work Visa (current sponsor: [Employer])". Slower process — most SA employers prefer Critical Skills route where eligible.
Intra-Company Transfer Visa
For multinationals transferring staff into SA office. Maximum 4 years, non-renewable. State as "ICT Visa, [sending country] → SA office, valid until [date]".
Spousal / Relative Visa with work endorsement
Family-route visa with section 11(6) work endorsement. State plainly with endorsement status — most SA employers will accept without further sponsorship.
Writing tips for South African CVs
Declare EE candidate status honestly
Employment Equity Act 55 of 1998 makes equity demographics a transparent hiring factor at designated employers. "EE Candidate: Black African Female", "EE Candidate: Coloured Male", "Non-EE: White Male" — state plainly. JSE Top 40, state-owned entities, and most professional services firms screen on this openly. It's a feature of SA hiring, not a bias risk.
List NQF level on every qualification
NQF 4 = Matric. NQF 6 = National Diploma. NQF 7 = Bachelor's. NQF 8 = Honours. NQF 9 = Master's. NQF 10 = Doctorate. SAQA-evaluated foreign qualifications get mapped to NQF too. State explicitly — "BCom Accounting, NQF Level 7, University of Cape Town, 2018". SA recruiters and ATS systems parse on NQF level for screening.
State SA professional registration upfront
SAICA (with TIPP / Q status for CAs), SAIPA, ECSA (with category — Candidate / Pr. Eng. / Pr. Tech. Eng.), HPCSA (with discipline + reg number), SANC, SAPC, SAVC, Law Society / GCB. These are non-negotiable for regulated professions. List body name + member ID + category.
List SA languages with proficiency
South Africa has 12 official languages. State home language ("Home language: isiZulu") and other proficiencies ("Afrikaans — fluent spoken + written", "isiXhosa — conversational", "English — business fluent"). Sales, customer service, public service, healthcare, and broadcasting roles screen on this heavily. Don't list languages you don't actually speak — SA recruiters often test.
Quantify in ZAR and reference JSE / SOE context
ZAR for financial metrics. JSE Top 40 (MTN, Vodacom, Standard Bank, FirstRand, Discovery, Sanlam, Old Mutual, Sasol, Naspers, Shoprite, Anglo American, Sibanye, Implats) or SOE / parastatal (Eskom, Transnet, SAA legacy, Telkom) scale called out. Reference Big 4 SA, B-BBEE level of your employer, mining-charter compliance where relevant.
List driver's licence with code and notice period
Code B (light motor vehicle, formerly 08), Code EB (light + trailer), Code C1 / C / EC1 / EC (heavier). State "Code B (manual, valid until 2028) + own vehicle". Notice period: "1 calendar month" (BCEA standard), "30 days" (probation), "2-3 calendar months" (senior). SA employers — especially in sales, field, mining, healthcare — screen on driver's licence specifically.
