Job Overview:

The Materials & Coatings Engineer applies their conceptual knowledge of Materials & Coatings and, with a moderate level of guidance and direction from colleagues and leadership, is responsible for solving a range of straightforward Materials & Coatings problems. They will be responsible for analyzing possible solutions using standard procedures and building knowledge of the company, processes, and customers. The Materials & Coatings Engineer understands critical business drivers and applies this knowledge to solve problems in straightforward situations by analyzing possible solutions using technical experience, judgment, and precedents.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Perform FEED, Studies and detailed design engineering, analysis, and calculations on more complex and demanding engineering tasks
  • Apply knowledge and skills to complete varied assignments
  • Prepare clear and accurate detailed material design and analyses including design reports and procedures
  • Prioritize and organize own work to meet deadlines
  • Focus on completing work within budgets
  • Communicate and explain information in straightforward engineering activities
  • Develop material specifications for projects Develop material selection reports and material selection diagrams of more complex projects Contribute to risk-based inspection study
  • Perform vendor document reviews on the subject of materials and metallurgy Assist in bid clarification meetings and bid reviews under the supervision of senior/principal/sr principal engineer
  • Assist in troubleshooting, failure investigations, and inspection activities
  • Preparation of material selection reports and diagrams for refinery units, petrochemical units, offshore installations, etc.
  • Develop and prepare metallurgical technical specifications for projects
  • Review vendor documentation on metallurgical topics
  • Contribute to the development of a risk-based inspection (RBI) study
  • Keep appraised on developments in the field of materials, fabrication methods, and other discipline-related fields
  • Recognize changes to scope and notify the discipline Lead Engineer
  • Interface with other departments to obtain input for metallurgy designs and drawings
  • Document substantive communications (communications that result in significant decisions or assignment of actions) and forward copies to the Lead Engineer and Metallurgy Manager
  • Provide required bid inputs as directed
  • Check engineering performed by others within the discipline
  • Develop an awareness of costs related to own work and of the discipline

Reports to:

Project: Lead Engineer

Functional: Supervising Department Manager

Liaise With: All design/drafting disciplines, all Engineering disciplines, Fabrication groups, and Document Control

Supervises: Trainee Engineers

Essential Qualifications and Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Engineering
  • 3-8 years of experience in oil and gas with a major contractor or consultant predominantly performing detail design
  • Familiar with the content and application of standards, codes, and guidelines as applicable
  • Knowledge of many basic design techniques and analysis methods
  • Preferably Registered Engineer in Training (EIT) or member of professional engineering society as applicable
  • Eager to learn and open to continuous development
  • Working knowledge of English, both oral and written
  • HSE, TQM, and cost-conscious
  • Show flexibility and ensure proper hand-over with regards to:
    • The reassignment to other departments, construction sites, and fabrication yards
    • The replacement of colleagues during illness and holidays
    • The provision of assistance to other colleagues with heavy workloads (also other projects) when possible/desirable
    • The managing/learning of future current working methods and software applications
  • Accredited engineering degree as may be required by specific regions
