Job description

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Consultant Neurosurgeon to join a leading hospital or multispecialty healthcare facility in Dubai. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive neurosurgical care, including diagnosis, surgical and non-surgical management, perioperative care, and follow-up of patients with neurological and neurosurgical conditions.

The Consultant Neurosurgeon will work collaboratively with neurologists, neuroradiologists, intensivists, oncologists, rehabilitation specialists, and other multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, evidence-based and patient-centred care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess, diagnose and manage patients with complex neurological and neurosurgical conditions.
  • Perform elective and emergency neurosurgical procedures according to clinical privileges and competency.
  • Manage conditions involving the brain, spine, spinal cord and peripheral nervous system.
  • Perform appropriate cranial and spinal surgical procedures, including trauma and tumour-related surgery.
  • Evaluate patients using clinical examination, MRI, CT, angiography and other relevant investigations.
  • Provide pre-operative counselling and explain treatment options, risks, benefits and expected outcomes to patients and families.
  • Lead perioperative management and ensure appropriate post-operative follow-up.
  • Manage neurosurgical emergencies, including traumatic brain and spinal injuries, intracranial haemorrhage and acute neurological deterioration.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions and tumour boards where appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive medical records and operative documentation.
  • Develop and follow evidence-based clinical protocols and patient-safety standards.
  • Provide clinical supervision, teaching and mentorship to junior doctors and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in continuing medical education, clinical audits, quality-improvement initiatives and research activities.
  • Maintain professional competence and comply with hospital policies, ethical standards and UAE healthcare regulations.
  • Work closely with the clinical privileging committee and medical leadership regarding the scope of neurosurgical practice. DHA notes that privileges for specialties without a dedicated DHA scope document are developed by the facility and approved through its medical director/clinical privileging process.

Qualifications & Licensing

  • MBBS/MBChB or equivalent medical degree from a recognised institution.
  • Recognised postgraduate qualification in Neurosurgery .
  • Specialist/Consultant-level qualification recognised under the UAE Unified Healthcare Professional Qualification Requirements (PQR) .
  • Valid professional registration/licence eligibility with the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) .
  • Current registration/licence in the country of practice, where applicable.
  • Current Certificate of Good Standing.

For surgical specialties, DHA's registration process specifically lists a last-two-years surgical logbook among the required documents.

The current PQR specifies consultant qualification and experience requirements according to the tier of the recognised specialty qualification. For surgical/interventional specialties, the applicable experience requirements should be verified against the candidate's exact qualification and DHA assessment.

Experience

  • Minimum experience appropriate for Consultant-level DHA eligibility.
  • Strong independent experience in neurosurgical procedures.
  • Experience managing complex neurosurgical cases and emergencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience in a recognised hospital or tertiary-care setting is preferred.
  • Teaching, research, publications and quality-improvement experience are advantageous.

Working Conditions

The Consultant Neurosurgeon may be required to:

  • Participate in on-call and emergency neurosurgical services.
  • Attend emergency consultations and urgent surgical cases.
  • Perform procedures in operating theatres and other designated clinical areas.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and clinical governance activities.
  • Work according to the hospital's roster, clinical privileges and service requirements.

A DHA professional registration confirms eligibility for the relevant professional category, title and speciality; the healthcare facility subsequently activates the registration into a professional licence before the physician can practise.
