Data Analyst Resume Examples: SQL, Dashboards, and Free Template

Data analyst resumes are read by analytics managers and product leaders who scan for three signals fast: SQL fluency, the BI stack you ship dashboards in, and one project that moved a real business decision. The strongest data analyst resume examples lead with that third one.

What hiring managers screen data analyst resumes for

Analytics managers screening data analyst resumes are looking past the title and into specifics. SQL is table stakes, so the question becomes how complex (window functions, CTEs, optimization for warehouse cost), and where (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Postgres). BI tooling is the next filter (Looker, Tableau, Power BI, Mode, Hex). Then they want to know whether you can take a stakeholder question and ship a defensible answer.

The strongest data analyst resume signal is one project that ties analysis to a decision. "Built a customer cohort dashboard in Looker" is OK; "Built a customer cohort dashboard in Looker; surfaced that month-2 retention dropped 14 points after a pricing change, which the product team rolled back" is hireable. Hiring managers in analytics are skeptical of busywork bullets and look for the one that connects work to outcome.

The third filter is communication. Data analysts ship reports, run readouts, and write decision memos. A resume bullet about a stakeholder presentation, a retro you led, or a cross-team explainer you wrote signals you can be sent into a meeting alone.

What to include on a data analyst resume

Contact + portfolio. Name, phone, email, city, LinkedIn, plus a portfolio link if you have one (a public dashboard, a GitHub with notebooks, a personal site with case studies).

Professional Summary (3-4 lines). Years of analytics experience, the SQL dialect and warehouse you've used, the BI tool you ship in, and one quantified business outcome. "Data analyst with 4 years in B2B SaaS; ship in Looker and SQL on Snowflake; built the retention dashboard cited in two pricing decisions and one churn-reduction initiative" is specific.

Skills. Group: Languages (SQL, Python, R), Warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift), BI Tools (Looker, Tableau, Mode, Hex, Power BI), Statistics (regression, A/B testing, cohort analysis), and ML if you've shipped any. List 4-8 per category; only what you can defend in an interview.

Experience. Reverse chronological. Company, title, dates. Lead each role with one project that drove a decision. Then 3-4 supporting bullets covering recurring reporting, ad-hoc analysis, dashboard ownership, and stakeholder partnership. Quantify whatever you can: dataset size, query performance, business impact.

Projects. Optional for senior. For junior or career-changer, this section can be the strongest one. List 2-4 substantive projects with the question, the data, the method, and the takeaway.

Education. Degree, university, graduation year, major (Statistics, Math, Computer Science, Economics, Business). Drop GPA after 3 years out unless 3.7+. Include any analytics certifications (Google Data Analytics, Looker Connect, dbt Fundamentals).

Skills to put on a data analyst resume

Lead with the hard skills that ATS keyword scanners can verify. Use soft skills sparingly, and only when paired with a phrase that proves them.

Hard skills

  • SQL (advanced: CTEs, window functions, query optimization)
  • Python (Pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn for analytics)
  • Warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Postgres)
  • BI tools (Looker, Tableau, Mode, Hex, Power BI)
  • Experimentation (A/B testing, multi-arm bandits, sample size)
  • Cohort and funnel analysis
  • Attribution modeling (multi-touch, last-touch, MTA platforms)
  • Forecasting and time series
  • dbt for analytics modeling
  • Git and version control

Soft skills

  • Translating business questions to SQL
  • Stakeholder readouts and decision memos
  • Pushing back on unanswerable questions
  • Working with PM, marketing, ops as embedded analyst
  • Documenting datasets so others can use them
  • Presenting analysis without leaning on charts

ATS keywords for data analyst resumes

These are the terms applicant tracking systems are tuned to find on a data analyst resume. Embed them naturally in your bullets and skills section - don't list them as a flat keyword wall.

Sample data analyst resume bullets

Use these as a model - replace the numbers and contexts with your own. Every bullet leads with a quantified outcome, not a duty.

  1. 1

Built customer cohort dashboard in Looker on a Snowflake warehouse; surfaced that month-2 retention dropped 14 points after a pricing change, leading product to roll back the change within two weeks.

  2. 2

Designed and read out the A/B test for a checkout redesign across 4.2M sessions; result was a 1.8% lift in conversion (p < 0.01) and the variant shipped to 100% within 3 weeks.

  3. 3

Owned the weekly executive metrics review for a $40M ARR business; rewrote 22 dashboards in Looker, reducing query cost on Snowflake by 38% and cutting load time from 14s to 3s.

  4. 4

Partnered with marketing ops to rebuild attribution model from last-touch to multi-touch in dbt + BigQuery; reallocated $400k of paid budget the following quarter and surfaced two underweighted channels.

  5. 5

Wrote and shipped 80+ ad-hoc SQL analyses for product, marketing, and ops over 12 months; documented every recurring query in a shared notebook used by 14 stakeholders to self-serve.

  6. 6

Mentored 2 junior analysts on SQL window functions and dbt model design through pair programming sessions; both shipped production dashboards within 8 weeks of joining.

Recommended resume structure

Section order matters. ATS systems and human screeners both expect this layout for data analyst resumes.

  1. 1Contact + LinkedIn + Portfolio
  2. 2Professional Summary
  3. 3Skills (languages, warehouses, BI, statistics)
  4. 4Experience
  5. 5Projects (juniors only)
  6. 6Education
  7. 7Certifications

Lead each Experience role with one project that drove a business decision, not with recurring reporting work. Hiring managers skim for the decision-driving bullet first; if it's not there, the resume reads as report-running rather than analysis.

Common mistakes on data analyst resumes

Listing every tool ever opened

If your skills section says "SQL, Python, R, SAS, Stata, Excel, Tableau, Looker, Power BI, Qlik, Mode, Hex, Domo, Sigma, Metabase," the hiring manager assumes most are surface-level. Pick the 4-8 you actually use and let the bullets prove the rest.

Bullets without business outcome

"Built dashboards for marketing team" is duty language. "Built attribution dashboard in Looker that surfaced the top three channels driving 60% of pipeline; marketing reallocated $400k of paid budget the following quarter" is outcome.

Vague SQL claims

"SQL proficient" reads as inflated. Replace with the dialect and the complexity: "SQL on Snowflake including window functions, CTEs, and warehouse-cost optimization across multi-billion-row event tables."

No A/B testing or experimentation

Most analytics roles touch experimentation. If you've designed an experiment, chosen the metric, or read out the result, name it. Saying nothing about experimentation in a data analyst resume reads as gap.

Mixing analyst and engineer language

Data analyst, analytics engineer, and data engineer are different jobs. Mixing dbt models, pipeline orchestration, and infrastructure work into an analyst resume confuses the screen. Stay in your lane unless the role explicitly straddles.

No portfolio link

A portfolio of one well-documented dashboard or one well-written analysis case study beats a resume that just lists tools. Hiring managers click through portfolios; missing one is a missed signal.
