Data Engineer
Location: Ridderkerk, The Netherlands

To support our growing digital services portfolio, we are looking for a talented Data Engineer who is passionate about building scalable data solutions and transforming complex data into actionable insights. In this role, you will work at the intersection of software engineering, cloud technologies, and data science, helping to develop the next generation of data-driven solutions for railway operations and fleet management.
Your Role
As a Data Engineer, you will be part of a multidisciplinary team consisting of engineering experts, data scientists, software engineers, HMI designers, and DevOps specialists. Working in an agile and innovative environment, you will design, develop, and maintain robust data platforms that enable advanced analytics, predictive maintenance, and operational excellence.
You will contribute directly to the development of scalable, secure, and production-ready solutions that support Alstom's digital transformation journey.
Key Responsibilities

Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot data pipelines, ensuring data integrity, quality, and availability.

Design and implement secure, production-grade data architectures and solutions.

Build and maintain multi-tenant data collection and storage platforms.

Develop streaming and data-processing capabilities for both batch and near real-time data flows.

Design scalable data models using SQL and NoSQL technologies.

Monitor and improve incoming data quality across multiple sources.
-
Implement data governance, security, and management components.
-
Maintain and secure infrastructure, virtual machines, servers, and cloud services supporting data-intensive applications.

Support team members in deploying applications and algorithms to cloud environments.
-
Deploy, monitor, and maintain machine learning models in production.
-
Evaluate emerging technologies and identify opportunities to enhance existing solutions.
-
Apply strong testing, validation, and quality assurance practices throughout the development lifecycle.
What We Are Looking For
Education
Required
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field.
Preferred
- Specialization in Software Engineering, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or Machine Learning.
Experience
Required
-
1-5 years of experience in software development, IT, digital companies, or startup environments.
-
Strong proficiency in Python programming.
-
Hands-on experience with data processing and software development.
-
Experience with Apache Spark, Apache Kafka and/or Apache NiFi in production environments.
-
Strong expertise in data modelling and database design.
-
Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases such as MySQL and Cassandra.
-
Knowledge of DevOps practices and tools including Docker and Ansible.
-
Experience with Git, source control, and release management.
-
Experience with orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow.
-
Familiarity with Azure DevOps and CI/CD pipelines.
-
Experience with monitoring tools such as Grafana.
-
Solid understanding of virtualization technologies, including ESXi.

Strong Linux administration skills.

Experience working with REST APIs.
Preferred
-
Understanding of distributed systems and horizontally scalable architectures.

Knowledge of Microsoft Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud Platform.

Knowledge of network and cybersecurity concepts such as SSL, certificates, IPSEC, Active Directory, and LDAP.

Experience with machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, Scikit-Learn, or similar AI toolkits.

Familiarity with Kubernetes or comparable orchestration platforms.

Experience with Java, Scala, or R.

Knowledge of the Apache open-source ecosystem.
