The Engineering Manager – Roads, Civils & Structures is responsible for leading and coordinating all civil and structural engineering activities across road and infrastructure projects. The role oversees multi‑disciplinary design and technical delivery (highways, junctions, earthworks, drainage, bridges, retaining walls, culverts, tunnels, ancillary structures, and associated civil works) from concept through detailed design, construction support, and handover. The Engineering Manager ensures safe, compliant, and constructible solutions, effective coordination between disciplines, and alignment with project, client, and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

1. Technical Leadership & Governance

  • Provide technical leadership for roads, civils, and structural engineering across assigned projects or programs.
  • Define and implement engineering standards, procedures, and best practices in line with company, client, and regulatory requirements.
  • Act as the senior technical authority or escalation point for key civil/structural engineering decisions.
  • Ensure that designs incorporate safety in design, durability, maintainability, and whole‑life cost considerations.

2. Multi‑Disciplinary Design Management

  • Plan and manage engineering activities for roads, civils, and structures from concept through detailed design and IFC.
  • Coordinate inputs from internal teams and external consultants (highways, geotechnical, drainage, bridges/structures, traffic, utilities, environmental, etc.).
  • Ensure integration of road alignments, junctions, pavements, drainage, and structures with adjacent infrastructure (utilities, rail, buildings, public realm).
  • Oversee the development and review of key deliverables, including alignments, profiles, typical sections, general arrangement drawings, structural designs, and calculations.

3. Quality, Compliance & Technical Assurance

  • Ensure designs comply with relevant standards, codes, and guidelines.
  • Establish and manage technical review and checking processes.
  • Lead or participate in technical assurance activities, including HAZID, constructability reviews, and value engineering workshops.
  • Work with quality teams to implement project quality plans, ensuring traceability of design decisions and calculations.

4. Interface with Project Management & Construction

  • Work closely with project managers to define scope, schedule, resource requirements, and key engineering milestones.
  • Provide technical input to project execution plans, risk registers, and design delivery programs.
  • Support construction teams with technical clarifications, responses to RFIs, and resolution of site issues.
  • Review method statements and temporary works concepts from an engineering perspective, in coordination with temporary works engineers where applicable.

5. Client, Stakeholder & Authority Engagement

  • Act as a senior technical point of contact for clients, statutory authorities, and key stakeholders on engineering matters.
  • Support or lead technical meetings, workshops, and presentations with clients, road authorities, utility providers, and third parties.
  • Coordinate responses to authority review comments and technical approvals for roads, structures, and drainage.
  • Ensure engineering outputs support planning applications, permitting, and land acquisition processes as required.
