Job Description

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (M&CS) seeks a lab manager to work for 0.8-0.9 FTE in the Nexus Lab. The Nexus Lab is a shared research, education and outreach facility that brings together researchers, students and support staff from across the department. The lab hosts a diverse collection of setups supporting activities in Digital Twining, Embodied AI, Software Engineering, Internet of Things Security, Robotics, Verification of Cyber-Physical Systems, Medical Visualization, and Programmable and Wireless Networks. The lab continuously evolves as new setups are added and existing setups are adapted to support emerging research and educational needs.

As lab manager, you will be responsible for the day-to-day operation, coordination and continuous development of the Nexus Lab. You will act as a central point of contact for the facility and work closely with a broad range of stakeholders, including researchers, students, setup managers, departmental support staff, central support staff (IT, facility management, real estate), health & safety officers, suppliers and external partners. The role combines technical expertise, stakeholder management and operational coordination. You will help researchers, students and support staff make effective use of the Nexus Lab and ensure the lab remains a safe, reliable and inspiring environment for research, education, demonstrations and outreach activities.

The successful candidate will be administratively embedded in the Interconnected Resource-aware Intelligent Systems cluster and work closely with researchers, students and support staff of the clusters ALGO (Algorithms), DAI (Data and AI), FSA (Formal System Analysis), IRIS (Interconnected Resource-aware Intelligent Systems), SEC (Security), SET (Software Engineering and Technology) and VIS (Visualization).

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and monitor compliance with the lab’s safety, security and operational procedures, including procurement processes, access management, user onboarding and maintenance coordination.
  • Serve as the primary operational contact for the Nexus Lab, for users and other staff, monitoring and reporting lab status and performance and proactively acting on (foreseen) issues affecting its functionality and availability.
  • Maintain a comprehensive inventory of laboratory assets, including hardware, software, networking, and non-technical (function/purpose of system, specific requirements, ...) aspects of the setups.
  • Maintain active relationships with TU/e infrastructure services (LIS), facility management, real estate, procurement, health & safety officers, and other university support services related to the operation of the lab, its continuity, and requirements.
  • Coordinate facility-related activities, including maintenance, renovations, access control, safety inspections and operational improvements.
  • Discuss infrastructure requirements, security needs, network connectivity, and future developments with IT support teams.
  • Support students and staff in the effective use of the lab infrastructure and software.
  • Facilitate collaboration between setup managers and research groups by organising and coordinating periodic Nexus Lab meetings, maintaining the (education) reservation/scheduling process and keeping track of infrastructure developments and plans.
  • Provide suggestions about expansion and use of the infrastructure hardware and software tools to improve performance and efficiency.
  • Help promote the Nexus Lab as a shared facility for research, education and outreach, for example be helping staff set up demos, research showcases, open days and outreach activities.
  • Support staff in the management of the lab for visits by research visitors, industry partners, government representatives, and other guests.

Job Requirements

  • HBO bachelors degree in ICT, Master or EngD degree in computer science, electrical engineering, systems engineering, or a related field;
  • Demonstrated experience with running and maintaining diverse IT infrastructures;
  • Strong and proven organizational and project coordination skills;
  • Experience administering and coordinating diverse technical environments comprising hardware, software, networking and cloud-based services;
  • The ability to understand and troubleshoot software and hardware systems;
  • Comfortable communicating with stakeholders in both Dutch and English (spoken and written);
  • Broad technical understanding of networking, network/system security, system administration and virtualization. Knowledge of standards and regulations for safety, security, and operational compliance;
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and stakeholder management skills;
  • Experience coordinating (technical) projects involving multiple stakeholders;
  • Highly organised and detail-oriented;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Salary in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale 9, ranging from € 3,873 to € 5,264 gross base salary per month (full-time), depending on your knowledge and experience.
  • In addition to your base salary, you will receive an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus, both calculated based on your annual gross base salary.
  • Generous leave options: a standard 29 days (based on a 38 hour working week) per year that you can increase to 41 days by working two hours more per week (flexible working hours). This is prorated if you work part-time.
  • As a TU/e employee, you participate in the ABP pension scheme, providing retirement pension and pension benefits for surviving dependents and occupational disability. TU/e pays 70% of the pension premium, while employees contribute the remaining 30%.
