We are currently looking for a Process Development Engineer – Integrated Photonics to join one of our innovative high-tech clients in the Enschede region.

Our client is at the forefront of integrated photonics, developing next-generation technologies that bridge the gap between scientific research and real-world applications. Working closely with industry leaders, universities and research partners, they develop advanced photonic technologies that support applications ranging from telecommunications and quantum technologies to healthcare, sensing and high-speed data communication.

As part of a growing R&D team, you'll play an important role in developing and optimising fabrication processes for next-generation photonic integrated circuits. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys combining hands-on laboratory work with process development and innovation in a cleanroom environment.

Process Development Engineer

Main responsibilities

As a Process Development Engineer, you will:

  • Develop and optimise thin-film deposition processes for advanced photonic devices.
  • Integrate functional materials, including piezoelectric thin films, onto silicon nitride photonic platforms.
  • Characterise and evaluate device performance to improve process quality and reliability.
  • Support the development of innovative photonic integrated circuits for emerging technologies.
  • Work closely with customers to translate research into practical industrial applications.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, research institutes and technical specialists to drive innovation.
  • Contribute to continuous improvements in fabrication processes, quality and production efficiency.
  • Share technical knowledge and support the ongoing development of new photonic technologies.

Requirements

We are looking for an engineer who enjoys solving technical challenges and working in a highly innovative R&D environment.

Ideally, you'll bring:

  • A Master's degree in Applied Physics, Nanotechnology, Materials Science or a related technical discipline.
  • At least 4 years of experience in process or technology development within a cleanroom environment.
  • Strong experience with thin-film deposition technologies and photolithographic processing.
  • Hands-on experience developing or optimising semiconductor or photonic fabrication processes.
  • Experience working with piezoelectric materials such as PZT or Aluminium Nitride (AlN) is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of CMOS fabrication processes, silicon photonics or photonic integrated circuits is considered an advantage.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary international teams.
  • Professional proficiency in English.
