Agilent's Detection R&D organization develops and supports a broad portfolio of analytical detectors used in UHPLC, GPC/SEC, and related separation technologies. Our portfolio includes absorbance, fluorescence, refractive index, light scattering, and other advanced detection technologies.

These products combine optics, fluidics, precision mechanics, motion systems, thermal management, electronics, and signal processing. As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will serve as a senior technical expert for released products, providing system-level oversight, troubleshooting complex technical issues, and driving product improvements across the portfolio.

As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will:

  • Serve as the technical expert for complex questions across Agilent's detector portfolio.

  • Own R&D sustaining activities for released products, including technical escalations, verification, obsolescence management, and product improvements.

  • Investigate challenging technical issues through experimentation, data analysis, and root-cause analysis.

  • Drive resolution of cross-functional issues spanning optics, electronics, firmware, mechanics, manufacturing, and applications.

  • Support initiatives such as supplier transitions, component substitutions, manufacturing improvements, and portfolio optimization.

  • Preserve and transfer critical technical knowledge across products and technologies.

  • Represent R&D in senior technical reviews and management forums.

What Makes This Role Unique

  • Technical ownership of an established portfolio of industry-leading analytical instruments.

  • Exposure to a broad range of technologies, products, and applications.

  • A combination of hands-on laboratory work, troubleshooting, and system-level problem-solving.

  • Opportunity to influence product quality, reliability, and customer success across the portfolio.

  • Close collaboration with R&D, manufacturing, service, and senior leadership teams.

Qualifications

Must Have

  • Master's degree or PhD in Physics, Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field, with at least 4+ years of relevant industrial experience.

  • Deep expertise in one or more of the following areas: optics, fluidics, precision mechanics, motion systems, thermal management, electronics, signal processing, or analytical instrumentation.

  • Strong systems-thinking skills and the ability to work across multiple technical disciplines.

  • Experience troubleshooting complex technical issues through experimentation, measurement, data analysis, and root cause analysis.

  • Experience supporting released products, sustaining engineering, technical escalations, or product lifecycle activities.

  • Professional proficiency in English and German.

  • Willingness to travel occasionally to customer, supplier, and manufacturing sites.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with analytical instrumentation, chromatography systems, or laboratory equipment.

  • Knowledge of detector technologies such as UV/Vis absorbance, fluorescence, refractive index, or light scattering.
