The University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) invites applications from qualified academics and industry professionals for the position of Adjunct Lecturer - Geomechanics (CIVL361) within the School of Engineering.

We are seeking a passionate educator with expertise in Geotechnical Engineering, Soil Mechanics, Rock Mechanics, or Ground Engineering to deliver undergraduate teaching in a core Civil Engineering subject. The successful candidate will contribute to developing students' understanding of soil and rock behaviour and their application to real-world geotechnical engineering problems.

About the Subject

CIVL361 - Geomechanics introduces students to the principles of soil and rock mechanics and their application in geotechnical engineering. Topics include:

  • Soil and rock behaviour
  • Soil classification and index properties
  • Soil compaction and compressibility
  • Effective stress and pore water pressure
  • Groundwater flow and seepage
  • Soil permeability
  • Settlement analysis
  • Shear strength of soils and rock masses
  • Mohr-Coulomb failure theory
  • Slope stability and stabilisation methods
  • Laboratory testing and interpretation of geotechnical data

The subject combines theoretical understanding with practical laboratory applications, preparing students for professional practice in civil and geotechnical engineering.

Key Teaching Responsibilities* The Adjunct Lecturer will be responsible for:

+ Delivering undergraduate lectures and tutorials in Geomechanics
+ Facilitating student learning through engaging and applied teaching methods
+ Assessing student work and providing timely, constructive feedback
+ Supporting the development of students' technical, analytical, and problem\-solving skills
+ Integrating contemporary geotechnical engineering practices and industry examples into teaching
+ Collaborating with the School of Engineering to maintain academic quality and student success
+ Supporting laboratory learning activities where required

The candidate is expected to work in accordance with the course curriculum and teaching plans, as well as take attendance and be involved in marking.

  • Offer consultation times to students outside of classroom hours
  • Liaise with subject coordinator before, during and at the end of the semester session
  • Complete grading of student work in a timely fashion, using clear rubrics, and with constructive feedback-
  • Input the grades into the student interface software (SMP), and complete subject report for the end of semester (training will be provided)-
  • Manage the acquisition of necessary supplies
  • Experience in using innovative approaches to teaching is also desirable.

Selection criteria – Qualifications, Education, Experience, Knowledge and Skills Essential:

  • You are an academically qualified engineering professional with both discipline expertise and a commitment to high-quality teaching.

+ Geotechnical Engineering
+ Civil Engineering
+ Geological Engineering
+ Rock Mechanics
+ Ground Engineering
+ Or a closely related discipline

✅ Demonstrated expertise in:

+ Soil Mechanics
+ Geomechanics
+ Geotechnical Engineering
+ Groundwater and Seepage Analysis
+ Foundation and Slope Engineering
+ Rock Mechanics

✅ University teaching experience in Civil Engineering or related disciplines

✅ Ability to explain complex engineering concepts clearly to undergraduate students

✅ Strong communication, presentation, and student engagement skills

Desirable Attributes

  • Industry experience in consulting, infrastructure, construction, mining, or geotechnical engineering
  • Chartered Engineer (or equivalent professional registration)
  • Experience supervising undergraduate projects
  • Familiarity with Australian, British, or international geotechnical engineering standards
  • Experience integrating laboratory and practical learning into engineering education
