Job Description The BrainEcho Lab within the Department of Neuroscience at Erasmus MC is looking for a passionate Postdoc (exceptional PhD candidates may also apply) to join our team and develop the next generation of intraoperative neurosurgical image guidance. Currently, neurosurgeons lack real-time, volumetric visualization of brain vasculature during procedures. Your work will bridge this gap, providing clinicians with detailed, continuous 4-dimensional (4D) images that enhance safety and surgical precision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prototype Development: Lead the hardware and software integration to build the first intraoperative 4D ultrasound prototype.
  • This will involve working closely with industrial and academic experts.
  • Algorithm Design: Develop imaging sequences, beamforming and signal processing algorithms to achieve high frame rates and detailed visualization of cerebral vasculature.
  • Clinical Translation: Collaborate closely with neurosurgeons to validate image quality and clinical utility in a real-world setting.
  • Dissemination: Publish findings in high-impact journals and present at international conferences.

Work environment Join us a key member of the BrainEcho Lab where we work on the latest advancements of ultrasound imaging for applications in neuroscience, neonatology and neurosurgery.

Within the lab, a team of master students, PhDs, Post-docs and assistant professors work towards one single goal: understanding the brain better with ultrasound. Our application has always been very clinically-focussed, with a strong link to our clinical partners in the department of neurosurgery, neurology, neonatology and radiology. Most of our work so far has focussed on intra-operative application of ultrafast ultrasound (functional Ultrasound, fUSi) during awake brain surgery. In our latest national and European projects we aim to push the technique further by providing continuous guidance for neurosurgeons during interventions.

The post-doc will be working a vibrant and mutlidisciplinary environment based in the department of neuroscience, with highly-skilled individuals with a big interest in using technology for the advancement of patient care. All members of our team are hard-working, disciplined but social scientists, who believe in team-work, open communication and collaboration.

The dept. of Neuroscience of the Erasmus MC is a historically large group with many different sublabs looking at topics ranging from the extremely fundamental to highly applied clinical work. The department itself is tight-knit, hosting a range of scientific and social events on a monthly basis, including a weekly department-wide labtalk.

Qualifications And Skills For this vacancy, the ideal candidate shows a collaborative mindset, with the ability to coördinate a multidisciplinairy team and manage the development of complex engineering systems. The following skills should also be present:

  • Education: A PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Technical Skills: Strong background in systems development and integration, ultrasound physics, and signal processing.
  • Programming: Proficiency in MATLA & Python (experience with or C++ & GPU programming/CUDA is a plus).
  • Soft Skills: A collaborative mindset with the ability to coordinate a multidisciplinary team and manage the development of complex engineering systems.
  • Fluency in English is paramount. Dutch language skills are also nice to have, but not required for this vacancy.

Terms of employment

  • You will receive a temporary position for 3 years.
  • The gross monthly salary amounts a minimum of € 3.724 ,- (scale 10) and a maximum of € 5.867,- (scale 10).
  • A salary increase of 3,5% from May 2027, according to the collective labor agreement (CLA).
  • Excellent fringe benefits, such as a 13th month that is already paid out in November and an individual travel expense package.
  • An International Office which aids you in preparing for you arrival and stay.
  • Pension insurance with ABP. We take care of approximately 2/3 of the monthly contribution.
  • Special benefits, such as a incompany physiotherapist and bicycle repairer. And there is also a gym where you can work on your fitness after work.
