- Eneco - Rotterdam
- See your models drive real-time trading decisions and create visible impact from day one
- Optimize a diverse portfolio of energy assets and directly support the energy transition
- Own and improve mission-critical optimization models while collaborating with traders, tech and operations teams Why choose Eneco?
At Eneco, you work on complex energy questions that matter. In this role, you help us use flexibility from our asset portfolio in a smarter way. That means your work supports the growth of renewable energy and helps Eneco create value in changing energy markets. You join the Asset Optimization team, a small team of data scientists within the Analytics & Realization domain. The wider domain consists of around 20 colleagues, including analysts, product managers, project managers and data scientists. You work closely with colleagues from trading, tech, operations and dispatching. This is a role with both depth and variety. You build and improve models, translate market opportunities into practical solutions and work with stakeholders to bring your ideas into production. You get ownership, short feedback loops and room to grow your expertise in a team that values collaboration and learning.
What you’ll do
As a Data Scientist in Asset Optimization, you develop and improve optimization models that help steer Eneco’s asset portfolio. Your work supports decisions in trading, asset operations and 24/7 operations. You help make our models more robust, scalable and valuable. Your main focus is the optimization domain within our Virtual Power Plant. This includes improving how we use flexibility from different energy assets, such as batteries, conventional assets, wind and solar. In the coming period, you will also contribute to projects such as international rollouts and further improving the logic behind battery optimization. You work with short feedback loops. You analyse, design, build, test, deploy and improve. Because the work is close to live energy markets, the impact of your improvements can often become visible quickly. Concretely, you will:
- Build and improve optimization models for energy asset dispatch;
- Translate contracts, market opportunities and asset behaviour into mathematical models;
- Develop clean, modular Python code and contribute to production-quality solutions;
- Improve monitoring and reliability based on real-time and realised asset data;
- Work with data scientists, developers, traders, dispatchers and operations colleagues;
- Help solve incidents when needed and use learnings to improve the model landscape;
- Bring your own ideas for improvement and turn strong ideas into practical results. Is this about you?
- Developing and maintaining optimization models that help Eneco use its asset portfolio in a smart and reliable way;
- Improving the value and robustness of models used in live operational and trading processes;
- Collaborating with colleagues in data science, tech, trading, forecasting, dispatching and operations;
- Identifying opportunities for improvement and helping to bring them from idea to implementation;
- Building reliable code and contributing to scalable, maintainable solutions;
- Supporting operational stability and learning from incidents when they occur. You’ll be responsible for
You are a data scientist who likes complex problems, but also wants to turn analysis into working solutions. You enjoy modelling, coding and working with others to create business impact. You do not need to know everything already. What matters is that you learn quickly, ask good questions and take ownership. You bring:
- A master’s degree or equivalent experience in a quantitative field, such as computer science, mathematics, statistics, econometrics, physics, engineering or a related field;
- Around 1 to 4 years of relevant work experience in data science, analytics or a comparable role;
- Strong Python skills and an understanding of clean code, testing and monitoring;
- Experience with mathematical modelling, optimization or algorithm development;
- Experience with cloud-based data environments, preferably including Azure, Databricks or similar tools;
- The ability to understand business needs and translate them into robust data-driven solutions;
- Strong English communication skills. Dutch is a plus, but not required.
Experience in energy, trading or consulting is a strong plus. It helps you understand the context faster, but we are also open to candidates who bring strong data science skills and the motivation to learn our market. If you do not meet every requirement, but you recognise yourself in this role, we still encourage you to apply. This is where you’ll work

The domain has around 20 colleagues and includes several teams, such as Asset Optimization, dispatching and nomination, customer-domain analytics and product or project management. This gives you a broad view of how models are used in practice and how your work contributes to better energy decisions.
