It's the opposite of the US "no photo, no DOB" rule, and the AGG legally allows it. Goes in persönliche Daten at the top — name the Paragraph (§18a / §18b / §16a) or the Card (Blue Card, Chancenkarte) plainly.
EU / EWR / Swiss citizen
List nationality plainly ("Deutsch", "Französisch", "Italienisch"). Free movement — no work permit needed. Often noted as "EU-Bürger:in".
Blue Card EU (§18b AufenthG)
University degree + qualifying salary (€48,300 minimum 2025, €43,759 for shortage occupations). State as "Blue Card EU, gültig bis [Datum]". Path to permanent residence in 21 / 33 months.
Aufenthaltstitel §18a / §18b (Fachkraft)
Skilled worker visa for vocational (§18a) or academic (§18b) training. Job offer required. State the paragraph explicitly — recruiters and HR Anerkennungsstelle parse on it.
Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card, since 06/2024)
Points-based job-search visa, up to one year. State "Chancenkarte gültig bis [Datum]" — many SME and Mittelstand employers prefer this over Blue Card sponsorship.
Ausbildungsvisum (§16a)
For vocational training (Ausbildung) in Germany. Tied to specific Ausbildungsplatz. State the program and Kammer (IHK / HWK).
Drittstaat (third-country national without permit)
For applications before a permit is issued, state intended route: "Chancenkarte beabsichtigt", "Blue Card-fähig (M.Sc. + qualifying salary)", "Anerkennung läuft (regulated profession)". Employers value clarity.
Writing tips for the German Lebenslauf
Keep the photo, keep the DOB — the AGG allows it
Lebenslauf with photo and date of birth is the German default, legally permissible under the Allgemeines Gleichbehandlungsgesetz. Use a professional Bewerbungsfoto (studio, €30-70, neutral background). The exception is some Berlin tech, FAANG Germany, and international startups — for those, follow the job ad. Mittelstand, DAX, public sector, BFSI, and legal still expect both.
Always include the Anschreiben
German employers — Mittelstand especially — read the Anschreiben before the Lebenslauf. One page, formal address ("Sehr geehrte Frau Müller", "Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren"), three paragraphs: motivation, match, close. Missing Anschreiben reads as "doesn't want this job specifically".
Use CEFR letters for language proficiency
A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2 — or "Muttersprache", "Verhandlungssicher (C1)", "Fließend (B2)", "Gut (B1)", "Grundkenntnisse (A2)". Add TestDaF, telc Deutsch, or Goethe-Zertifikat with the level number. Vague "fluent German" doesn't pass German HR screens.
Name regulated qualifications and Anerkennung status
For Ärzt:in, Pflegekraft, Ingenieur:in (especially Bau / Elektrotechnik), Lehrer:in, Architekt:in, Apotheker:in — state Anerkennung status from ZAB or the relevant Kammer. "Approbation seit 06/2024", "Anerkennung läuft (Bescheid Q3/2025)", "Gleichwertigkeit festgestellt". Skips a 6-week conversation with HR.
Quantify in EUR and use German format
€-Symbol nachgestellt ("250 Mio. €"), Punkt als Tausendertrenner ("1.250.000 €"), Komma für Dezimal ("3,5 %"). DAX 40 / MDAX / SDAX listing of past employers carries weight. Familien-Mittelstand and Konzern distinguished. Reference Bundesland (Bayern, Baden-Württemberg, NRW) where relevant.
Sign and date the last page
German convention: "Berlin, den 21.05.2026" + handwritten or scanned signature at the bottom of the last page. Missing signature looks unfinished. Many recruiters and ATS systems explicitly check for it. Generate as image, embed in PDF.
