Job description

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.

Job Description Introduction:

We invite you to take your career to an exciting new level by joining the team of operators who run the CERN accelerator complex from the CERN Control Centre (CCC). The Operations Group is responsible for the exploitation of the entire CERN accelerator complex and its technical infrastructure, including the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), running a rich proton, antiproton and heavy ion experimental programme. You will be at the heart of the preparation and delivery of particle beams to the different physics programs at CERN. When not operating these complex machines, you will contribute to the development of applications and advanced tools to support and improve operation.

Functions:

  • Take part in the 24/7 shift team which runs CERN's accelerator complex.
  • Operate proton and/or ion accelerators (Linac3, Linac4, PSB, LEIR and/or PS) and the beam lines to the associated experimental facilities on a shift basis, ensuring the safe and timely execution of the physics schedule and obtaining the defined beam performance goals.
  • Work closely with accelerator physicists to set up and optimise the accelerator operation and to design, document, commission and optimise various operational scenarios.
  • Participate in the development of applications and advanced tools as part of a team or in collaboration with engineers or physicists within the OP group or within a specialised equipment group.
  • Outside periods of accelerator operation, assist the technical infrastructure team with the operation of CERN's technical infrastructure or other CERN equipment groups, if required.

Qualifications

  • Higher Technical or Administrative Diploma or equivalent in the field of Administration, Computer Engineering, Data Analysis (non-exhaustive) or a related field.

Experience:

  • Initial work experience in a technical or scientific environment.
  • Experience in the field of physics, engineering or computing.
  • Basic knowledge of software engineering in a modern development language environment.
  • Familiarity with automation concepts and techniques, with an interest in improving operational efficiency and reliability.
  • Drive to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team and contribute to continuous operational improvements.
  • Experience in the field of operating large facilities and their associated hardware (e.g. measurement devices, power converter techniques, vacuum equipment, PLCs, work in controlled radiation areas, etc.) would be an asset.

Technical competencies:

  • Operation of accelerators.
  • Analysis and optimisation of accelerator performance.
  • Testing and validation of detector, accelerator and beam line components.
  • Knowledge of programming techniques and languages.
  • Development of application software.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Working in Teams: cooperating constructively with others in the pursuit of team goals; balancing personal goals with team goals.
  • Managing Self: taking initiative beyond regular tasks and making things happen.
  • Solving Problems: anticipating obstacles; assessing alternative solutions in order to have a fall-back plan.
  • Communicating Effectively: ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented.
  • Demonstrating Accountability: taking responsibility for own actions and decisions.

Language skills:

  • Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language.
