Localisation Engineer - Mapping (m/f/d)

Role Overview We are seeking a skilled Software Engineer with experience in LiDAR-based mapping and HD map toolchains to lead and support the development of scalable mapping workflows for autonomous robotics applications.

The successful candidate will focus initially on scaling and optimizing existing LiDAR mapping pipelines, while also contributing to HD map generation and tooling. This role offers opportunities to expand into broader software integration responsibilities across autonomous systems and robotics projects.

You will be responsible for automating and enhancing LiDAR-based map generation processes, including data cleaning, optimization, and quality control. In later phases, you will support HD map generation and integration, developing robust tools and systems that enable end-to-end autonomous navigation capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Scale and optimize existing LiDAR mapping pipelines to support large-scale, high-quality map generation.
• Automate LiDAR map generation, cleaning, and post-processing workflows to improve efficiency and consistency.
• Develop tools for map validation, visualization, and management.
• Contribute to the generation and integration of HD maps (e.g., Lanelet2, OpenDRIVE).
• Build and maintain internal toolchains for HD map editing, alignment, and version control.
• Ensure generated maps meet quality standards and integration requirements within autonomous systems.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including localization, planning, and infrastructure teams, to deliver production-ready mapping solutions.
• Contribute to broader software integration and robotics development initiatives as required.

Qualifications & Skills

• Proven experience with visual or LiDAR-based mapping and map processing workflows.
• Strong background in point cloud processing, feature extraction, registration, and mapping optimization.
• Experience with SLAM and localization frameworks such as Cartographer, LIO-SAM, FAST-LIO, or LeGO-LOAM.
• Familiarity with HD map formats including Lanelet2, OpenDRIVE, or similar technologies.
• Strong programming skills in Python and C++ for tooling and backend development.
• Solid understanding of robotics software architectures, with hands-on experience in ROS/ROS2.
• Experience working in Linux environments and using tools such as Docker and Git.

Education

• Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, Software Engineering, or a related field.
