The DLR Institute of Propulsion Technology focuses on the development of high-performance and environmentally friendly aircraft engines and gas turbines. Its research encompasses both the development and application of highly efficient methods and rapid simulation techniques, as well as the use of unique test benches and sophisticated measurement methods. The research topics relate to high-performance and quiet propulsion concepts, environmentally friendly turbo components and low-emission combustion chambers.

What You Can Expect The Engine Acoustics Department focuses on the acoustics of transient processes in turbomachinery and gas turbines, particularly aircraft engines. Current areas of research include the numerical simulation and experimental investigation of noise generation. We are also working on design guidelines for low-noise aircraft engines and investigating ways to reduce noise from engines and gas turbines. The External Sound Fields group develops methods for characterising sound sources based on microphone array measurements in the acoustic far field.

Your tasks

  • Application of methods for localising and analysing rotating sound sources using microphone arrays
  • Development of advanced array methods, taking complex sound source models into account
  • Publication of the results in scientific journals

What You’ll Need

  • A completed university degree in engineering, physics, mathematics or other fields relevant to the role
  • In-depth knowledge of technical acoustics and signal processing
  • Excellent Python programming skills
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Experience in applying and developing methods for localising moving sound sources
