Key Responsibilities of the Role:
- Act as the main duty holder for all crane and lifting operations on the project, with authority to stop works where controls are inadequate.
- Establish, implement and maintain the site lifting management system in line with company procedures and applicable legislation/standards (e.g., LOLER/PUWER equivalents and BS 7121 principles).
- Plan, review, approve and control lifting operations (routine, standard, complex and critical), ensuring lift plans, RAMS and drawings are suitable and sufficient.
- Select the correct crane for the task and verify capability at the maximum required radius/height, including configuration, duty charts, stability limits and operational constraints.
- Confirm load weight, dimensions and centre of gravity are known/verified and that lifting points and rigging methods are appropriate and protect the load.
- Assess and confirm crane standing / ground bearing arrangements (outrigger loads, mats/cribbing, proximity to excavations/edges, underground services) in coordination with Temporary Works where required.
- Manage crane mobilisation, erection, climbing/tie-ins, alteration and dismantle activities, ensuring supplier method statements, permits and exclusion zones are in place.
- Coordinate crane utilisation with construction sequencing and logistics, including SIMOPS with other plant (e.g., concrete placing booms, telehandlers, MEWPs, piling rigs) and multi-crane interface controls.
- Ensure the riggers, slinger/signallers, crane operators and lifting supervisors understand and follow the safe system of work and the details/limitations in the approved lift plan.
- Verify crane operators are suitably trained, competent and authorised; ensure working hours/fatigue controls are applied for crane operators and key lifting personnel.
- Ensure the safe working load (SWL/WLL) is never exceeded (except controlled test conditions under competent supervision where applicable) and that duty charts/RCI/LMI systems are not bypassed.
- Ensure cranes do not operate in weather or site conditions exceeding manufacturer/project limits (wind, visibility, storms, icing) and that stop-work criteria are enforced.
- Verify lifting accessories are correctly selected, certified, inspected, clearly marked, stored and fit for purpose; maintain current sling charts and SWL tables on site.
- Define and enforce lift communications (radio protocols, hand signals, call signs, language controls) and ensure all lifting personnel are briefed via pre-lift briefings/toolbox talks.
- Ensure lift permits/permissions are obtained where required (e.g., oversailing agreements, lifting near third parties, road/highway occupancy, restricted areas, out-of-hours works).
- Lead lifting-related audits/inspections, incident/near-miss investigations and corrective actions; drive continuous improvement and lessons learned in lifting operations.
Before starting work Lifting Supervisor will ensure that:
- A suitable and sufficient risk assessment has been carried out, which considers all aspects of the lift including environmental factors such as the proximity of obstructions, underground services, overhead cables and structures,
- Lift plans, lift drawings and method statements for the lifting operation are developed, reviewed and approved as appropriate,
- Appropriate protection measures and exclusion zones are put in place,
- A current thorough examination and/or test record has been issued and is available for each item of lifting equipment and accessory,
- The SWL/WLL of the lifting equipment and accessories is adequate for the weight of the load and the rigging configuration (including sling angles),
- All lifting accessories are clearly marked with their safe working load/working load limit and unique identification,
- Correct and up-to-date copies of the crane duty charts, Sling Chart and Safe Working Load tables are available (including multi-leg slings),
- The method of communication is agreed and understood by everyone involved in the lift (signals/radio/channel),
- A suitable rack/controlled storage is available for storing slings and accessories when they are not in use,
- A trained and competent rigger / slinger-signaller team is available and appointed for the operation,
- All personnel involved in the lifting operation have been briefed and understand the risks, method of work and the equipment to be used including emergency arrangements,
- Required permits/permissions have been gained where necessary (e.g., public highway/public place, oversail, restricted zones),
- The crane will be capable of lifting the required loads at the maximum required radius of operation for the planned configuration,
- The work area is kept free of obstructions, particularly where the crane operates on rails or within defined slewing envelopes,
- The weight of each load is known/verified, and the correct lifting accessories are available and inspected,
- There are no restrictions on access/egress (including vehicle sizes) for rigging/de-rigging and safe set-down areas are defined,
- All necessary precautions with regards to live overhead electric cables and other services have been taken,
- All work areas are adequately lit and visibility criteria are met,
- Warning has been given of slewing activities and adjacent property/interfaces have been protected as necessary,
- A rescue and emergency response plan is in place and acceptable in terms of practicality,
- Competency, training and qualifications of personnel involved in the lifting operation have been checked and recorded.
Essential Criteria for the Role:
- Minimum 7+ years’ experience in lifting operations / crane management on large construction projects.
- Recognised Appointed Person qualification (e.g., CPCS A61 Appointed Person – Lifting Operations or equivalent).
- Good working knowledge of lifting legislation, regulations and codes of practice (e.g., LOLER, PUWER and BS 7121 Safe Use of Cranes principles).
- Demonstrable competence in producing and approving lift plans (routine/standard/complex/critical), including crane selection, duty chart checks, rigging design and site surveys.
- Experience managing tower and/or mobile crane operations including erection/climbing/dismantle interfaces with suppliers and Temporary Works.
- Strong leadership, communication and coordination skills with multi-national teams; able to run pre-lift briefings and interface meetings.
- CITB HS&E (Managers & Professionals) or equivalent construction safety test/certification, as required for AP competency routes,
- Construction site management qualification (e.g., SMSTS/SSSTS or recognised equivalent) and proven site management capability.
Desirable Criteria:
- NVQ/SVQ Diploma in Controlling Lifting Operations – Planning Lifts (Level 5/6) or equivalent competency-based qualification.
- CPCS A62 Crane Supervisor and/or A40 Slinger/Signaller (or equivalent) to support supervision and rigging interfaces.
- Experience on hyperscale/data centre projects and high-SIMOPS environments, including anti-collision/zoning systems.
- Competence in temporary works interface (TWC/TWS) for crane bases, mats, tie-ins and lift-related temporary works.
- Ability to produce lift planning sketches/scale diagrams and utilise digital planning tools.

Hauptverantwortlichkeiten der Stelle:
- Als Hauptverantwortlicher für alle Kran- und Hebevorgänge im Rahmen des Projekts fungieren und die Befugnis haben, die Arbeiten zu stoppen, wenn die Kontrollen unzureichend sind.
- Einrichten, Umsetzen und Aufrechterhalten des Hebemanagementsystems auf der Baustelle gemäß den Unternehmensrichtlinien und den geltenden Gesetzen/Normen (z. B. LOLER/PUWER-Äquivalente und BS 7121-Grundsätze).
- Planen, prüfen, genehmigen und kontrollieren Sie Hebevorgänge (routinemäßige, Standard-, komplexe und kritische), um sicherzustellen, dass Hebepläne, Gefährdungsbeurteilungen und Zeichnungen geeignet und ausreichend sind.
- Wählen Sie den für die Aufgabe geeigneten Kran aus und überprüfen Sie die Leistungsfähigkeit bei maximal erforderlichem Radius/Höhe, einschließlich Konfiguration, Belastungsdiagrammen, Stabilitätsgrenzen und betrieblichen Einschränkungen.
- Vergewissern Sie sich, dass Gewicht, Abmessungen und Schwerpunkt der Last bekannt/überprüft sind und dass die Anschlagpunkte und Anschlagmittel geeignet sind und die Last schützen.
- Die Kranstand- und Bodenlagerungsanordnungen (Abstützlasten, Matten/Unterkonstruktionen, Nähe zu Baugruben/Rändern, unterirdische Leitungen) sind gegebenenfalls in Abstimmung mit den temporären Bauwerken zu beurteilen und zu bestätigen.
- Kranmobilisierung, Montage, Kletter-/Anbindungsarbeiten, Umbau- und Demontagearbeiten managen und sicherstellen, dass die Arbeitsmethoden, Genehmigungen und Sperrzonen der Lieferanten vorhanden sind.
- Die Krannutzung wird mit der Bauablaufplanung und der Logistik abgestimmt, einschließlich SIMOPS mit anderen Anlagen (z. B. Betonverteilermasten, Teleskoplader, Hubarbeitsbühnen, Rammgeräte) und Schnittstellensteuerungen für mehrere Krane.
- Stellen Sie sicher, dass die Rigger, Anschläger/Einweiser, Kranführer und Hebeaufsichtspersonen das sichere Arbeitssystem und die Details/Einschränkungen im genehmigten Hebeplan verstehen und befolgen.
- Prüfen Sie, ob die Kranführer entsprechend geschult, kompetent und autorisiert sind; stellen Sie sicher, dass die Arbeitszeit- und Ermüdungsregelungen für Kranführer und wichtiges Hebepersonal eingehalten werden.
