Job description
Manager - Chemicals (m/f/d)
In Germany - Berlin | Bonn | Cologne | Frankfurt/Main | Hamburg | Munich As a Manager (m/f/d) in our Chemicals practice, you will help leading chemical and materials companies navigate some of their most important commercial and strategic questions: where to grow, how to win and defend attractive profit pools, and how to translate strategy into commercial execution.
You will work at the intersection of commercial strategy, pricing, sales and commercial transformation. Typical questions range from validating growth and specialty strategies, shaping differentiated commercial models for commodity and specialty businesses, and accelerating commercialization, to redesigning route-to-market, commercial operating models and performance steering.
You will lead project teams, work directly with senior executives, and combine rigorous analysis with pragmatic implementation to create measurable revenue and profit impact.
What makes us special:
- Advance your career with exciting professional opportunities in our thriving company with a startup feel
- Add to your experience with our projects that focus on growth, have a positive impact, and truly matter
- Voice your unique ideas in a corporate culture defined by our entrepreneurial spirit, openness, and integrity
- Feel at home working with our helpful, enthusiastic colleagues who have great team spirit
- Broaden your perspective with our extensive training curriculum and learning programs (e.g. LinkedIn Learning)
- Speak your mind in our holistic feedback and development processes (e.g. 360-degree feedback)
- Satisfy your need for adventure with our opportunities to live and work abroad in one of our many international offices
- Enjoy our benefits, such as hybrid working, daycare allowance, corporate discounts, and wellbeing support (e.g. Headspace)
- Unwind in our break areas where you can help yourself to the healthy snacks and beverages provided
- See another side of your coworkers at our frequent employee events and highly anticipated World Meeting and Holiday Party
How you will create an impact:
- Lead end-to-end consulting engagements for chemical and materials companies, from strategic hypothesis development and commercial validation through design and implementation
- Help clients identify where and how to win, translating market, customer and competitor insights into clear growth priorities and commercially robust strategies
- Challenge growth strategies through explicit sources of growth, right-to-win, price-volume economics and value-capture logic
- Develop differentiated commercial approaches for commodity, moderately differentiated, specialty and solution businesses, recognizing that different business models require different pricing, sales, contracting and steering models
- Design and implement commercial strategies, route-to-market models and commercial operating models, including customer segmentation, channel strategy, governance, decision rights, KPIs and organizational interfaces
- Accelerate commercialization and application-led growth, helping clients convert innovation and technical capabilities into customer adoption and profitable growth
- Improve commercial performance through pricing, customer and portfolio steering, share-of-wallet development, key account management, contracting and Sales Excellence
- Help clients adapt to structural changes in the chemicals industry, including changing value chains, regionalization, circularity and sustainability, new sources of competitive advantage and increasing pressure on European assets
- Work directly with senior management and C-level executives, facilitate management discussions and translate complex analysis into clear decisions and actionable recommendations
- Manage and develop project teams, providing clear problem solving, coaching and feedback while ensuring high-quality delivery
- Contribute to business development by developing client relationships, identifying relevant strategic questions and shaping compelling project approaches
- Advance Simon-Kucher’s Chemicals expertise through new perspectives, methodologies and thought leadership on profitable growth and commercial transformation
About you:
- You hold a university degree in Business, Economics, Engineering, Chemistry, Natural Sciences or another relevant field
- You bring at least four years of relevant professional experience in strategy consulting, a specialized consultancy, in-house consulting or a commercial role in chemicals, materials or a related B2B industry
- You have a strong interest in how chemical and materials businesses create and capture value; prior chemicals experience is highly desirable but deep curiosity and the ability to learn complex industries quickly are equally important
- You are comfortable addressing questions that combine strategy and execution – from market attractiveness and competitive positioning to pricing, sales, organization and performance management
- You can structure ambiguous problems, formulate hypotheses, work confidently with quantitative and qualitative evidence, and translate insights into clear management recommendations
- You understand that commercial models differ across commodity, specialty and solution businesses and can think beyond generic Commercial Excellence playbooks
- You have successfully led workstreams or projects and can manage multiple stakeholders while maintaining analytical depth and delivery quality
- You enjoy working with senior executives, can challenge constructively and communicate complex topics clearly and concisely
- You combine intellectual curiosity with pragmatism: you want to understand why a strategy should work and what it takes to make it work in the market
- You have initial experience leading and coaching colleagues and enjoy developing high-performing teams
- You are entrepreneurial, client-focused and interested in contributing to the continued development of our Chemicals practice
- You are fluent in German and English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills
