Job description
What to Expect We are looking for an experienced senior counsel to join the Tesla Privacy Legal team. The role will oversee and navigate data protection compliance across the EMEA region. As a part of our Legal group, you will have the opportunity to work with a dynamic and experienced team on a wide variety of legal issues impacting Tesla’s business and products (both locally and globally). You will work directly with business and engineering teams to apply legal standards and applicable frameworks to design innovative data, privacy, cybersecurity, and AI solutions as it relates to Tesla compliance activities and regulatory obligations.
You may be challenged to creatively apply your deep legal expertise to rare and complex aspects of the law. Legal smarts are required, but you need to have a keen business sense, a strong work ethic, and a deep passion for customers and data protection. You must have the ability to operate independently, proactively, and cross-functionally with technical and non-technical teams across the company. As we expand our offerings globally, your ideas and contributions will make an immediate impact.
What You'll Do* Assist in driving privacy and data protection compliance for the appropriate business and functional leaders and their teams. Collaborate with business and engineering teams on incorporating privacy by design into products/services and adopting innovative legal solutions from inception and beyond.
- Continuously enhance Tesla’s global privacy program through the performance of gap assessments and executing remediation activities. Timely respond to customers as well as regulatory inquiries related to data, privacy, cybersecurity, and AI.
- Provide privacy and data protection guidance to Tesla business functions, such as those supporting our vehicle, energy, robotics, insurance, and financing groups.
- Research and track global privacy and security legislation, evolving regulations, and enforcement and translating that into practical advice. Counsel on privacy and security incident preparedness and management.
- Create and present engaging training and awareness content and further develop Tesla’s privacy and data protection practices across EMEA.
- Experience executing regulatory requirements and reflecting relevant changes in external privacy notices, internal privacy and data handling policies, playbooks, and other materials supporting Tesla’s global privacy program.
What You'll Bring* Strong substantive knowledge of EU privacy laws (including GDPR, ePrivacy Directive), and relevant data, cybersecurity, and AI regulations and frameworks (including Data Act, AI Act, NIS2, CRA). Excellent analytical, written and verbal skills with the ability to present information/complex legal matters clearly and concisely.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage a diverse and complex workload while maintaining priorities and proactively anticipating issues. Consistent good judgment and ability to apply legal knowledge to help create practical business solutions.
- Flexibility, a positive attitude, a sense of humor, and the ability to constructively balance change in alignment with business needs. Strong execution and project management skills, and ability to corral stakeholders from across the organization on cross-functional initiatives.
- Law degree and qualification to practice law in one EEA member state. Ideally 6 to 10 years of relevant in-house experience (or law firm) with evidence of exceptional ability.
- Certified International Privacy Professional Certification (CIPP) is preferred.
- Pluses include significant consultancy experience and proficiency in a language in which Tesla has a market presence in addition to English.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, gender identity or any other factor protected by applicable federal, state or local laws.
