Job description

Want to play a key role in the cloud transformation taking a SaaS platform with thousands of users worldwide to the next level? Are you a hands-on technical leader who's just as happy diving into Terraform and Kubernetes yourself as you are coaching engineers to the next level? Then we're looking for you!

About the role

For an established, internationally growing SaaS organisation in the Delft region, we're looking for a Principal Cloud Engineer (Azure). The organisation is in the middle of a major infrastructure transition: moving from a legacy on-premise datacenter to a modern multi-cloud environment that will support the company's growth in the years ahead. You'll play a key role in that transition.

You'll join one of five closely collaborating engineering teams and work closely with an architect and the responsible manager to determine technical direction. This is explicitly not a role from the sidelines: you'll build infrastructure yourself, coach engineers on tricky architecture questions, and make sure teams stay well aligned with each other. For the right candidate, this is a unique opportunity to be truly decisive in how a platform with 24/7 uptime requirements evolves toward a mature multi-cloud strategy.

What you'll do

  • Drive the transition from a legacy on-premise datacenter in the Netherlands to a modern multi-cloud environment built on Azure, and help determine which steps take priority
  • Guide engineers hands-on in writing and restructuring Terraform modules, expanding Kubernetes/AKS clusters, and resolving complex production issues, while improving the observability setup together with them (e.g. Influx, VictoriaMetrics, Nagios)
  • Align technical choices across the five engineering teams (Hosting, SRE Engineering, Artification, Virtual Appliance, and Front Office) so architectural decisions don't conflict with one another
  • Take end-to-end ownership of concrete infrastructure transformation projects, from initial design through go-live, and initiate technical discussions when teams get stuck on a decision
  • Sit down with the architect and product owner to determine which cloud solution best fits business goals, and translate those choices into a concrete plan for the teams
  • Take part in the on-call rotation and actively help think through how this process can become smarter and less demanding, for example by automating more around alerting and incident follow-up

Who you are

  • You have at least 7 years of experience as a Cloud Engineer, with demonstrable depth in Kubernetes and Terraform in production environments
  • You have broad Azure experience (networking, compute, storage) and can hit the ground running from day one
  • You're a hands-on technical leader who drives major cloud transformations while also coaching and developing engineers

About the organisation

This is an established, internationally growing SaaS player that has been building software for a good while now, helping service teams worldwide improve their service delivery. With revenue in the tens of millions and a growing international customer base, the organisation is in a pivotal phase: the platform is being modernised, cloud foundations are being strengthened, and there's significant investment in the engineering capacity needed to sustainably support global scale.

A culture of ownership, transparency, and pragmatic problem-solving is central: "you build it, you own it." Teams work in an agile way, in two-week sprints, and use retrospectives to continuously refine how they work. The backlog is managed collaboratively and there's plenty of room for input, engineers are expected to help shape the direction of the platform, not just its execution.

The organisation places strong value on open communication and constructive feedback, in an environment where every voice is heard. You'll mostly work from the office, in close contact with colleagues from the various engineering teams, so knowledge is easily shared and decisions can be made quickly. At the same time, there's attention for work-life balance and the future of work, staying connected as a team even as the organisation continues to grow and go international.

What we offer

  • Gross annual salary up to €123,000 based on 40 hours, depending on experience
  • 26 vacation days
  • Hybrid working
  • A key role in a large-scale, multi-year cloud transformation with plenty of ownership
  • A Vitality Budget of €50 per month for sports, a gym membership, or other things that contribute to your mental and physical health
  • Travel reimbursement or an NS business card, plus the option to lease a bicycle through the company
  • Compensation for your on-call/standby duties, on top of your regular salary
