Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

POSITION OVERVIEW

A AND K FIRE AND SAFETY EQUIPMENT LLC is looking for an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with strong technical knowledge in Smoke Management Systems, Mechanical Ventilation, Fire Fighting Systems, Hydraulic Calculations, and Fire Pump Selection.

The candidate will be responsible for preliminary and detailed engineering calculations, system design, equipment selection, technical proposals, authority submissions, and technical support throughout project execution, testing, commissioning, and handover.

The role requires strong coordination with consultants, suppliers, manufacturers, Technical Office, Project Teams, and Civil Defense authorities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Design and prepare calculations for Smoke Management Systems (SMS) in accordance with UAE Fire & Life Safety Code, Civil Defense requirements, NFPA standards, and project specifications.
• Design and calculate Mechanical Ventilation Systems, including:
• Supply Air Systems
• Exhaust Air Systems
• Make-up Air Systems
• Smoke Exhaust Systems
• Fire Pump Room Ventilation
• Staircase Pressurization
• Lobby Pressurization
• Car Park Ventilation
• Perform engineering calculations including:
• Airflow calculations
• Static pressure calculations
• Duct sizing
• Fan selection
• Make-up air calculations
• Louver sizing
• Pressure differential calculations
• Smoke extraction calculations
• Prepare preliminary system calculations and equipment selections during the tender and quotation stage to support accurate technical and commercial proposals.
• Coordinate with specialist manufacturers and suppliers for the selection of:
• Smoke Exhaust Fans
• Pressurization Fans
• Motorized Dampers
• Smoke Control Dampers
• Louvers
• Smoke Vents
• Actuators
• Control Panels
• Related accessories
• Review supplier technical proposals, equipment selections, and calculations to ensure compliance with project specifications and authority requirements.
• Design and review Fire Fighting Systems, including:
• Automatic Sprinkler Systems
• Fire Hose Reel Systems
• Landing Valve Systems
• Fire Hydrant Systems
• Fire Pump Systems
• Foam Systems
• Deluge Systems
• Water Spray Systems
• Other specialized fire protection systems
• Perform complete Hydraulic Calculations for Fire Fighting Systems, including:
• Sprinkler hydraulic calculations
• Hose reel and landing valve demand
• Hydrant demand
• Combined system demand
• Pipe friction losses
• Elevation losses
• Fittings and valve losses
• Required residual pressure
• Total system flow and pressure requirements
• Determine the required Fire Pump Duty Point based on hydraulic calculations.
• Carry out Fire Pump Selection, including:
• Required Flow
• Required Pressure
• Total Dynamic Head
• Suction and discharge conditions
• Static and friction losses
• Pump capacity
• Pump head
• Pump curve review
• Duty point verification
• Electric and diesel pump selection
• Jockey pump selection
• Review fire pump manufacturer selections, datasheets, pump curves, and technical proposals to confirm compliance with NFPA 20, UAE Fire & Life Safety Code, project specifications, and Civil Defense requirements.
• Prepare and review hydraulic calculation reports for consultant and authority submission.
• Review available water supply conditions and determine their impact on the required fire pump capacity and pressure.
• Prepare technical design calculations, technical reports, and calculation sheets for consultant and Civil Defense submissions.
• Prepare and review mechanical and fire protection shop drawings.
• Ensure designs comply with:
• UAE Fire & Life Safety Code
• Civil Defense Requirements
• NFPA Standards
• ASHRAE
• SMACNA where applicable
• Project Specifications
• Consultant Requirements
• Coordinate with consultants, suppliers, manufacturers, subcontractors, Technical Office, and Project Teams to resolve technical issues.
• Provide technical support to the Project Team during installation and ensure work is executed according to approved drawings, calculations, and specifications.
• Conduct site visits when required to verify actual site conditions and provide practical engineering solutions.
• Support Testing & Commissioning activities for Smoke Management, Ventilation, Fire Fighting, and Fire Pump Systems.
• Prepare technical reports related to system performance, testing results, site modifications, and engineering recommendations.
• Review site modifications and update designs and calculations accordingly.
• Coordinate with suppliers and manufacturers throughout the full project lifecycle, from initial equipment selection through procurement, installation, testing, commissioning, and final handover.
• Support preparation and review of Material Submittals, Method Statements, RFIs, Technical Clarifications, and consultant responses.
• Support Estimation and Operations Teams in preparing technically compliant proposals and equipment selections.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Minimum 5 to 8 years of relevant UAE experience in Fire Protection, Smoke Management, Mechanical Ventilation, or HVAC design.
• Strong experience in Smoke Management and Mechanical Ventilation calculations.
• Strong experience in Fire Fighting system design and hydraulic calculations.
• Strong knowledge and practical experience in Fire Pump sizing, hydraulic calculations, pump selection, and pump curve evaluation.
• Good knowledge of UAE Fire & Life Safety Code and Civil Defense requirements.
• Strong knowledge of applicable NFPA standards, particularly:
• NFPA 13
• NFPA 14
• NFPA 20
• NFPA 24
• NFPA 92
• Other applicable standards
• Strong experience with AutoCAD.
• Strong experience with Revit MEP and BIM coordination.
• Good knowledge of HVAC and ventilation calculation and equipment selection software.
• Strong knowledge of fire protection hydraulic calculation software.
• Ability to independently prepare engineering calculations, technical submissions, and authority documentation.
• Ability to review project specifications, tender documents, consultant comments, and authority requirements.
• Strong coordination and communication skills with consultants, suppliers, manufacturers, and Project Teams.
• Strong technical report writing skills.
• Fluent English communication skills.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

• Previous experience with a Fire & Life Safety contractor or MEP contractor in the UAE.
• Experience preparing and supporting Civil Defense and consultant submissions.
• Experience designing Smoke Management Systems for warehouses, commercial buildings, high-rise buildings, industrial facilities, and other major developments.
• Experience with mechanical smoke extraction, natural smoke ventilation, staircase pressurization, lobby pressurization, and make-up air systems.
• Strong experience in Fire Fighting hydraulic calculations and Fire Pump selection.
• Experience supporting projects from tender stage through design, procurement, execution, testing, commissioning, and final handover.

KEY OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE

The main objective of this position is to provide complete mechanical engineering support for Fire Protection, Smoke Management, and Ventilation Systems, starting from preliminary calculations and equipment selection during the tender stage, through detailed design, hydraulic calculations, Fire Pump selection, authority approval, project execution, testing, commissioning, and final handover.
