About the team and the role:

We are looking for a Director of Software Engineering (d/f/m) who will be part of the Global Shipping team and lead our Shipping engineering organization in Germany, helping us build exciting products at eBay. Every day, millions of users sell and ship their wares using eBay. Our team supports this diverse community by building shipping products around the globe, helping individual sellers and small businesses meet the growing expectations of online buyers. We are a product-oriented team; we move fast and stay curious.

You will lead multiple engineering teams developing modern, large-scale Java/Spring Boot services, providing leadership across both people and technology. You will develop and coach engineering managers and senior technical leaders, shape the organizational and technical roadmap, drive architectural and engineering excellence, and build an environment where our teams and people can grow and succeed. Moreover, you will work closely with Product and Engineering leaders across the Global Shipping organization and play a key leadership role within our German engineering hub.

It’s a unique opportunity to build and shape a growing engineering organization based on a collaborative, transparent, and highly technical culture, while delivering products and platforms that impact millions of buyers and sellers around the world.

What you will accomplish:

  • Lead and grow eBay’s Shipping engineering organization in Germany, managing multiple engineering teams and leaders while building a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing engineering culture.
  • Define and drive the engineering strategy and technical roadmap for the organization, partnering closely with Product, Architecture, and global Shipping leadership to translate business priorities into scalable technology solutions.
  • Own the execution and delivery of critical Shipping initiatives across the Germany engineering teams, ensuring strong alignment, predictable delivery, and operational excellence for capabilities serving millions of buyers and sellers globally.
  • Provide technical and organizational leadership for large-scale distributed systems, driving architectural alignment and high standards for scalability, reliability, security, observability, engineering quality, and long-term platform health.
  • Develop strong engineering leaders and senior technical talent, establishing effective organizational structures, succession plans, and career development opportunities while attracting and retaining exceptional engineering talent.
  • Represent the Germany engineering organization within the broader Global Shipping and eBay technology organization, influencing cross-organizational priorities, driving adoption of modern engineering practices, and fostering collaboration across locations and domains.

What you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and 12+ years of software engineering experience building and operating large-scale, high-volume systems, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8+ years of engineering leadership experience, including significant experience leading multiple teams and engineering managers across back-end, front-end, and native mobile engineering in a complex, global technology organization.
  • Strong technical depth and breadth across modern software architectures and technologies, including Java/Spring Boot back-end services, JavaScript/React web applications, and native mobile applications for iOS and Android, as well as microservices, RESTful APIs, event-driven architectures, and cloud-native platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to define engineering strategy, evolve complex architectures, and lead the execution of large, cross-organizational technology initiatives spanning back-end services, web experiences, and native mobile experiences, while balancing customer impact, delivery, reliability, and long-term technical investments.
  • Proven track record of building high-performing engineering organizations, developing managers and senior technical leaders, raising engineering standards, and creating a culture of accountability, innovation, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and influencing skills, with the ability to partner effectively with senior Product, Engineering, Design, and business leaders across a global organization and drive alignment through complex technical and organizational decisions.
