Job description

Whom are we looking for?

As our BESS Technical Director, you will lead the development and execution of Ampowr’s hardware engineering strategy. This leadership role is critical to ensuring our hardware platform is robust, scalable, and aligned with the needs of the energy transition.

You will guide a team of electronics, mechanical and R&D engineers, owning the full product development lifecycle—from concept through prototyping, supplier engagement, testing, and release. The ideal candidate has a strong technical foundation in electronics, renewable energy (preferably solar or BESS), and experience coordinating across suppliers, customers, and internal teams.

To be successful in this role, you are expected to:

  • Define and lead the hardware engineering roadmap for our BESS platform in collaboration with product and software teams.
  • Provide hands-on technical direction in areas such as power electronics, control systems, battery interfaces, and hardware integration.
  • Ensure hardware designs meet performance, safety, certification, and cost targets, as per ISO requirements.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the hardware engineering team to scale with the business.
  • Implement engineering best practices, documentation standards, and development processes to increase efficiency and quality.
  • Oversee the design, prototyping, testing, and validation of electronic systems for BESS, including PCBs, control boards, sensors, and communication modules.
  • Coordinate technical due diligence and integration activities with suppliers, manufacturers, and OEM partners.
  • Support field testing, system commissioning, and hardware-related customer queries when needed.
  • Act as the key technical liaison across commercial, EMS, and operations teams to align on customer needs, product specs, and timelines.
  • Represent the hardware engineering function in external engagements with partners, suppliers, and customers.
  • Ensure feedback from the field and internal stakeholders feeds back into hardware development.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience in hardware/system development roles, preferably in solar, energy storage, or power electronics.
  • Proven experience leading technical teams or projects involving suppliers, manufacturers, and internal stakeholders.
  • Proven knowledge in PV modules, inverters, MV stations, MMF, cables, transformers, MV switchgears, relays and industry best practices.
  • Proven knowledge of embedded electronics, PCB design, sensors, power conversion, or control systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of BESS system design (engineering planning), IEC codes and specifications according to the project / country-specific requirements as per relevant standards.
  • Robust track record of hardware testing, safety compliance, and validation procedures.
  • Proficient knowledge of the English language, Dutch is a strong plus.

Nice to Have:

  • Prior experience with BESS products, energy inverters, battery packs, or EMS integration.
  • Previous experience in a dynamic, fast-growing engineering environment
  • Exposure to firmware-hardware interfacing or battery management systems (BMS).

What we offer:

  • Compensation for additional costs related to your employment.
  • 70% employer contribution to your pensionable salary.
  • Between 25-35 paid holiday days per year (based on full-time employment).
  • Hybrid work environment.
  • Travel allowance.
  • Catered lunch at the office.
  • Work equipment supplied by the company.
  • Opportunities for personal development (training, programmes, etc.).
  • A dynamic and inspiring environment, where you’ll have every opportunity to challenge yourself and bring your ideas to life.
  • The chance to work for an international company with a great team. We have an open culture and a flat organisational structure, working together towards the same goal.
  • Freedom to come up with and implement your ideas.
