Job description
About the Role:
We are looking for a Senior Wireless Network Engineer to own the design, deployment, and ongoing optimization of our enterprise wireless environment. You will be the technical authority for everything Wi-Fi — from RF design and site surveys through Catalyst 9800 deployment, ISE-based security, and Wi-Fi 6/6E performance tuning. This is a hands-on leadership role: you will set wireless design standards, resolve the hardest escalations, and mentor junior engineers as the practice grows.
If you live and breathe RF, know the Catalyst 9800 inside out, and can explain 802.11r fast roaming to both an engineer and an executive, we want to hear from you.
What You'll Do
Design & Deployment:
- Architect, implement, and optimize enterprise Wi-Fi networks built on Cisco Catalyst 9800 WLCs, Cisco DNA Center (Catalyst Center), and Cisco ISE.
- Perform predictive and on-site RF planning and validation surveys using Ekahau or AirMagnet, ensuring optimal coverage, capacity, and performance for standard and high-density spaces.
- Configure and fine-tune Wi-Fi 6/6E (802.11ax) deployments, including channel planning, power management, and 6 GHz-specific considerations.
Performance & Client Experience:
- Optimize roaming behavior and client experience using 802.11r/k/v, and ensure voice and video traffic performs reliably through end-to-end wireless QoS.
- Perform spectrum analysis and RF tuning to identify and eliminate interference, co-channel contention, and channel-planning issues.
- Use Cisco Wireless Assurance and analytics/telemetry for proactive monitoring, alerting, and continuous performance improvement.
Security:
- Design and enforce wireless security standards, including 802.1X, WPA3, and ISE-driven authentication and policy (dot1x, MAB, guest, BYOD, posture).
- Partner with the security team to keep the wireless edge aligned with corporate policy and compliance requirements.
Operations & Leadership:
- Act as the final escalation point for complex wireless issues — coverage, interference, roaming, and authentication — and drive them to root cause.
- Produce and maintain high-quality documentation: designs, configurations, survey reports, and test/acceptance results.
- Collaborate with network, security, and mobility teams to deliver seamless end-to-end integration.
- Mentor junior engineers and define wireless design standards and best practices for the organization.
- (Preferred) Build automation for deployment and configuration using Python and Cisco APIs (e.g., Catalyst Center / 9800 programmability).
What You'll Bring:
Essential
- Active CCIE Enterprise Wireless (or legacy CCIE Wireless) — required.
- Proven hands-on expertise with Cisco Catalyst 9800 WLCs and Cisco DNA Center in production enterprise environments.
- Deep knowledge of Wi-Fi 6/6E (802.11ax) technologies, protocols, and security models.
- Strong RF engineering skills: design, coverage/capacity planning, and spectrum analysis.
- Expert understanding of 802.1X, WPA3, and ISE-based wireless security policy design.
- Practical experience optimizing roaming with 802.11r/k/v.
- Working knowledge of QoS for wireless voice/video applications.
- A structured, methodical approach to wireless troubleshooting and performance tuning.
Preferred
- Wireless automation experience (Python, REST APIs, NETCONF/RESTCONF).
- Familiarity with Cisco wireless assurance tooling and telemetry analysis.
- Exposure to multivendor wireless environments (e.g., Aruba, Meraki).
- High-density deployment experience (campuses, stadiums, large enterprises).
