How to Write a Cover Letter with No Experience

Hiring managers screening entry-level applications read cover letters more carefully than they do for senior roles. The reason is simple: at senior levels, the resume's track record carries the screen. At entry level, the resume has thin work history, so the cover letter has to do real work. It's the place to show maturity in writing, evidence of homework done on the company, and one substantive piece of work the resume can only summarize.

The biggest mistake no-experience cover letters make is apologizing. "Although I don't have professional experience in this field, I'm eager to learn..." is the most common opening, and it's the worst. It reminds the reader of the gap, signals lack of confidence, and wastes the most-read part of the letter. The strongest letters open instead with a specific project, course, or experience that maps to the role and lead with what you've already done, not what you haven't.

The second filter is whether the letter sounds like an adult wrote it. Long, comma-spliced sentences signal student writing. Short, structured paragraphs signal readiness. The cover letter is the first writing sample the hiring manager sees; treat the writing itself as the work.

Greeting. Address the hiring manager by name if you can find it. Otherwise, "Dear Hiring Manager." Skip "To Whom It May Concern."

Opening (2-3 sentences). State the role and one specific project, course, or experience that maps to it. Don't apologize for being entry-level. The recruiter knows; you don't need to remind them.

Why-them paragraph (3-4 sentences). Reference one specific thing about the company or team: a published value, a recent product launch, a blog post, a public initiative. Connect it to something you've already done or studied. This is the paragraph that proves you read past the job posting.

Why-you paragraph (3-5 sentences). Walk through one substantive project or experience: what you built or led, the method or approach, and the outcome. Quantify whatever you can. End with one sentence connecting the work to the JD's stated needs.

Closing (2 sentences). Forward-looking offer to talk. Mention attachments and any portfolio, GitHub, or writing link.
