Job Summary:
Datalec Precision Installations (DPI) is a leading provider of data centre design, supply, build, and managed services. We are committed to delivering seamless and integrated solutions for data centre operators worldwide. We are seeking a Mechanical Estimating Engineer to join our team. This role will be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for mechanical building services packages on mission-critical data centre projects. This role requires strong technical knowledge of HVAC systems, and associated mechanical services systems commonly found within hyperscale and co-location data centers.
Working closely with pre-construction, design, procurement, and project delivery teams, you will play a key role in securing new business opportunities and ensuring commercially viable project submissions.
Core Duties & Responsibilities
· Prepare detailed mechanical estimates and cost plans for data centre construction projects.
· Analyse tender documentation, drawings, specifications, and employer requirements.
· Conduct quantity take-offs for mechanical services packages.
· Develop competitive and accurate pricing models using estimating software and spreadsheets.
· Assess labour, materials, plant, subcontractor, and equipment costs.
· Produce comprehensive tender submissions within required deadlines.
· Review enquiries and identify project risks, opportunities, and value engineering solutions.
· Prepare and issue subcontractor and supplier enquiries.
· Evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations for technical and commercial compliance.
· Attend pre-tender meetings, site visits, and client presentations where required.
· Support contract negotiations and post-tender clarifications.
· Interpret mechanical design documents and assess buildability.
· Review HVAC, cooling, ventilation, chilled water and mechanical infrastructure systems.
· Ensure estimates align with relevant industry standards, project specifications, and client requirements.
· Collaborate with design teams to optimise project solutions and costs.
· Identify key commercial risks and mitigation strategies.
· Assist in developing tender programmes and resource requirements.
· Support handover meetings between pre-construction and project delivery teams.
· Maintain accurate costing databases and historical project records.
· Represent the business, upholding our core values and behaviours with all internal and external customers, clients and third parties
· Maintain business and client confidentiality, adhering to applicable Data Protection regulations and Information Security Standards in line with company, and group policies and procedures.
Qualifications: Skills and Experience
· Degree, HNC, HND, or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering.
· Proven experience in mechanical estimating within MEP, building services, or mission-critical environments.
· Strong understanding of data centre mechanical systems including:
o HVAC Systems
o Data-centre Specific CRAH/CRAC units, CDUs, In row Coolers, Rear Door Hxs
o Chilled water systems including Equipment/Plant
o Pipework installations
o Ventilation systems
o Heat rejection systems
· Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
· Strong commercial awareness and cost analysis skills.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Blue-Beam and estimating software.
· Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
