At our Berlin-Charlottenburg site, we are looking to fill the following position in Department 8.4 (Mathematical Modelling and Data Analysis):
Postdoctoral Researcher
Statistics, Data Science, Scientific Computing, Applied Mathematics
Remuneration Group 13 TVöD Bund ○ Two-year fixed term ○ Full-time
This position is generally suitable for part-time work.
Your tasks:
PTB Working Group 8.45 develops statistical methods for metrology and advises both legal and industrial metrology on their application. We offer the opportunity to translate cutting-edge statistical research into regulatory practice. The aim of your work is to develop statistical sampling procedures for a more cost-effective and sustainable surveillance of utility meters. The results are to be incorporated into procedural instructions issued by the verification authorities (for Section 35 of Germany’s Measures and Verification Ordinance) and will herewith help shape the extension of the verification period for millions of electricity, water, heat and gas meters.
Your tasks will include:
- Further development and analysis of recently published sampling procedures, with a focus on statistical properties
- Development of suitable methods for the assessment of statistical model assumptions underlying the sampling procedures and their adaptation to practical requirements
- Development of efficient calculation methods, as well as software or tables, to implement the sampling procedure
- Coordination with and consideration of the needs of stakeholders (verification authorities, laboratories and associations representing manufacturers, operators and users of utility meters)
- Preparing scientific publications and presenting them at international conferences and in national committees
Your profile:
- A completed university degree (Master’s or Diplom) and a PhD in statistics, data science, scientific computing, applied mathematics or a comparable subject
- In-depth knowledge of statistical methods, preferably in Bayesian inference, acceptance sampling and Poisson processes
- Experience in developing statistical methods with due regard to practical requirements
- Interest in and willingness to develop expertise in legal metrology and the regulatory framework governing the surveillance of utility meters
- Experience in translating research findings into regulatory applications is desirable
- Experience in scientific programming, preferably in R, Python or Matlab
- Confident facilitation and coordination of interactions with various stakeholders
- An independent, committed and goal-oriented approach to scientific work
- You are a strong team player with excellent communication skills
- Language skills in German (C1 level) and English (B2 level)
- Willingness to travel on business
