Junior Project Engineer – Industrial Software & Algorithms

Located in Düsseldorf, the HSG European Institute for Smart Manufacturing connects HSG’s global R&D network with European universities, research institutions, and industrial partners. Our goal is to transform collaborative research in smart manufacturing into practical engineering applications and market-ready products.

About the Role

As part of the HSG European Institute for Smart Manufacturing, you will work directly with the Head of the Institute and support Sino-German industry–academia research projects.

You will contribute to technical requirement analysis for industrial software, manufacturing algorithms, and digital factory projects, coordinate research partnerships, monitor project progress, review technical deliverables, and support the industrial adaptation, further development, and productization of algorithm models and software prototypes.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Requirements Analysis

1. Support the analysis, refinement, and breakdown of industrial software and algorithm requirements across different product lines within HSG’s overall smart manufacturing solution architecture, including algorithm functions, model performance indicators, software modules, and industrial application requirements.

Technical Documentation

2. Translate abstract product requirements into standardized, complete, and clearly structured software and algorithm project specifications, and communicate and deliver them accurately to partner universities, research institutes, and other research teams in Germany.

Research Collaboration and Technical Coordination

3. Liaise with professors and research teams in Germany to address technical questions, clarify requirements, and align project schedules, ensuring a clear understanding of project objectives, algorithm functions, model performance indicators, and software requirements.

Project Monitoring and Deliverable Review

4. Support the management of industry–academia research projects throughout the project lifecycle, monitoring R&D progress, technical quality, and interim deliverables while contributing to overall quality control.

5. Review algorithm models, software prototypes, and technical concepts delivered by research partners, evaluate their functionality, technical performance, and suitability for industrial applications, and help ensure that projects progress according to agreed objectives, technical specifications, and timelines.

Industrial Adaptation and Productization

6. Review and verify algorithm models, software prototypes, and other technical results delivered by research partners, coordinate the resolution of technical issues and iterative improvements, and support project acceptance, industrial adaptation, further development, and productization.

What We Are Looking For

1. Familiarity with the German university research environment and German industrial technology practices, combined with strong skills in requirement analysis, information structuring, technical documentation, and project coordination.

2. A solid understanding of smart manufacturing digital systems, production optimization, intelligent scheduling, digital twins, or industrial data analytics, as well as the industrial application of software and algorithms.

3. Professional fluency in Chinese, English, and German, with the ability to communicate independently with researchers in Germany and manage technical discussions and documentation.

4. A structured, detail-oriented, and proactive approach, with strong execution skills and the ability to coordinate multiple tasks and follow projects throughout their lifecycle.

Education and Relevant Experience

1. A bachelor’s degree from a German university in Industrial Software, Smart Manufacturing Algorithms, Industrial Artificial Intelligence, Manufacturing Data Science, Digital Factory Technologies, or a related industrial technology discipline. Outstanding recent graduates are welcome to apply.

2. Experience gained through university projects, research projects, or a thesis involving smart manufacturing optimization algorithms, factory digital twins, production data analytics, or industrial software is preferred. Internship experience with a German industrial software company, manufacturing company, technology company, or research institution is an advantage.

3. This role focuses on industrial manufacturing and smart manufacturing applications. Candidates with a purely internet-based or gaming algorithm background should also have relevant experience in industrial applications or manufacturing projects.
