Job description
Job Summary
The Instrument Technician shall be responsible for the installation, calibration, inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of instrumentation and control equipment used in power plants, process plants, desalination plants, and other industrial facilities. The Technician should be capable of working independently and carrying out assigned jobs safely and efficiently in accordance with the Client’s requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out installation, calibration, testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of field instruments.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance of instrumentation systems.
- Work on pressure, temperature, flow, and level instruments.
- Maintain and calibrate transmitters, switches, gauges, indicators, control valves, actuators, and positioners.
- Perform instrument loop checking, functional testing, and commissioning activities.
- Troubleshoot faults in instrumentation and control circuits.
- Carry out installation and maintenance of instrument tubing, fittings, junction boxes, control panels, and instrument cables.
- Perform cable termination, gland installation, and continuity checking.
- Carry out impulse line installation, inspection, and leak testing where required.
- Read and understand P&IDs, loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, instrument datasheets, and technical drawings.
- Use calibration and testing equipment such as multimeters, process calibrators, pressure pumps, and HART communicators.
- Maintain calibration, testing, inspection, and maintenance records.
- Maintain tools, machines, and test equipment issued for the job.
- Report any equipment defect, abnormal condition, or safety issue to the Supervisor.
- Coordinate with Electrical, Mechanical, Operations, and Control & Instrumentation teams.
Experience Requirements
- Minimum five 1 to 5 years of relevant field experience as an Instrument Technician.
- Experience should preferably be in:
- Power plants
- Process plants
- Desalination plants
- Oil & Gas facilities
- Petrochemical plants
- Heavy industrial facilities
- Should have hands-on experience with:
- Pressure Transmitters
- Temperature Transmitters
- Flow Transmitters
- Level Transmitters
- Pressure and Temperature Switches
- Control Valves
- Actuators
- Positioners
- Solenoid Valves
- Gauges and Indicators
- Junction Boxes and Instrument Panels
- Knowledge of PLC and DCS systems will be an added advantage.
Technical Skills
- Good knowledge of 4–20 mA signals and instrumentation control loops.
- Ability to carry out instrument calibration and fault finding.
- Ability to use HART communicators and standard calibration equipment.
- Knowledge of pneumatic and electronic instrumentation systems.
- Familiarity with instrument tubing, fittings, cable termination, and wiring.
- Ability to understand instrument ranges, process parameters, and calibration procedures.
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
Safety Requirements
- Shall understand all applicable safety requirements and employ safe working practices.
- Shall comply with the Client’s safety rules, regulations, and site procedures.
- Shall follow Permit to Work and Lockout/Tagout procedures where applicable.
- Shall be familiar with working at height and confined-space safety requirements.
- Shall use proper PPE including safety helmet, safety shoes, gloves, goggles, and other required protective equipment.
- Shall maintain proper housekeeping at the workplace.
