Job description
What to Expect Location: Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg
Duration: 6 months
Time type: Full-Time
Start date: August / September 2026
The Internship assignment :
The Electronic Failure Analysis Team is responsible for investigating, diagnosing and root causing failures across electronic components, printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs), and integrated electronic systems for Tesla Vehicles. When a part fails in the field, in production, or during validation, our laboratory determines why it failed and translates those findings into corrective actions and containment that protect quality and reliability.
Beyond reactive failure analysis, we play a proactive role: we support the validation of new programs, run technical training, and drive cross-functional projects with Design, Quality, Manufacturing and Supplier teams. Our work spans the full lifecycle of an electronic product from early validation, through production, to field returns with a strong emphasis on electronic technical diagnostics.
As an intern, you will work hands-on with our lab equipment, learn structured root cause methodology, and contribute directly to investigations and projects that impact real Tesla products.
What You'll Do* Perform hands-on failure analysis on electronic components, PCBAs, and modules to identify the root cause of a failure.
- Reproduce and confirm reported failure modes using bench instrumentation and electronic equipment to isolate the defect down to the component, joint, or signal level.
- Apply structured root-cause methodology (e.g., 5-Whys, fishbone/Ishikawa, 8D) and document findings with data and evidence.
- Collaborating on cross-functional projects with Design, Quality, Reliability, Manufacturing and Suppliers.
- Participate in and help prepare technical training on Failure Analysis methods, tools and lab equipment.
- Design or improvise simple test fixtures and diagnostic tools for real vehicle components (hardware and software).
What You'll Bring* Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's program in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Mechatronics, or a related field.
- Basic understanding of electronics fundamentals (circuits, components, signal types).
- Ability to read electronic schematics and interpret electrical measurements.
- Familiarity with common electronic lab equipment (multimeter, oscilloscope, power supply, soldering tools).
- Strong attention to detail, curiosity, structured evidence driven approach to problem solving.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative.
- Good communication skills in English.
- Hands-on, curious, and eager to learn in a real production environment.
- Candidates are expected to uphold and actively promote sustainability principles in their daily work, operating in line with Tesla Global Environmental, Health, Safety & Security (EHS&S) Policy and EMAS requirements, fostering a culture of continuous environmental improvement.
Additional qualification:
- Basic knowledge of communication protocols (CAN, LIN, SPI, I2C).
- Experience with PCBA inspection and micro soldering on SMD components.
- Familiarity with automotive electronics or embedded systems.
