Job description

As an AI Engineer Intern, you'll get hands-on experience building and improving real components of an enterprise-grade AI platform: intelligent routing between AI models, cost and usage optimisation tooling, guardrails and safety systems, and the tooling that helps teams go from an idea to a governed, deployed agent quickly.

This is a live, evolving platform already being used to solve real operational challenges for enterprise customers — so you'll be contributing to something with genuine impact, not a sandbox exercise.

You'll gain exposure to agentic AI architectures, responsible-AI design patterns, and the practical realities of operating AI safely and reliably at enterprise scale — a strong foundation whether you're headed toward AI infrastructure, applied ML engineering, or platform engineering roles after graduation.

What You’ll Do:

As an AI Engineer Intern, you'll work alongside and support our AI Engineers on real, active components of this platform — helping with implementation, testing, and day-to-day engineering tasks under their guidance.

This is a hands-on learning opportunity: you won't be expected to work independently on complex problems, but you will be contributing to genuine, in-use platform work, gaining practical experience you won't get from coursework or personal projects alone.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Skills

  • Write and debug code (primarily Python, or other languages as needed) under the direction of an AI Engineer, following existing patterns and codebase conventions.

  • Build a working understanding of core AI/ML concepts used on the platform — large language models, retrieval-augmented generation, and agentic workflows — enough to contribute to and reason about the code you're working on.

  • Assist with testing, bug fixes, and small feature implementations assigned by your supervising engineer.

  • Learn to use the team's tools, frameworks, and internal systems, asking questions and seeking guidance as needed.

  • Steadily build confidence and independence in your technical work over the course of the internship.

Project Delivery

  • Complete clearly scoped tasks assigned by an AI Engineer, checking in regularly on progress and blockers.

  • Support the team in breaking down larger pieces of work into smaller tasks you can take on.

  • Communicate honestly and early when something isn't working or you're stuck — asking for help is expected and encouraged.

  • Keep simple documentation or notes on what you've built, so your supervising engineer can review and build on it.

  • Work within agreed timelines, with support from your team to reprioritise when needed.

Role Flexibility

  • Be open to working on different parts of the platform — backend logic, testing, tooling, documentation — depending on what the team needs support with.

  • Adapt as priorities shift, since you'll often be picking up tasks that free up time for the AI Engineers you're supporting.

  • Help with day-to-day tasks like preparing demos, organising test cases, or tidying up documentation, in addition to core engineering work.

  • Bring curiosity and a willingness to learn — this role is about growing your skills while providing real, useful support to the team.

  • Proficiency or willingness to learn programming/scripting languages (e.g. Python, SQL, JavaScript).

  • Basic understanding of AI/ML concepts (e.g. large language models, APIs) or strong willingness to learn.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional engineering teams.

  • Familiarity with version control (e.g. Git), basic software engineering practices, and observability tooling (e.g. OpenTelemetry/OTel) is a plus.

  • This internship is ideal for a candidate interested in building hands-on AI engineering experience, contributing to a real enterprise AI platform, and learning directly from experienced AI Engineers.
