Job Purpose:

The Design & Technology and ICT Technician supports the safe, efficient and effective delivery of Design & Technology, Electronics, Product Design and ICT across Key Stage 3, GCSE and Post-16.

The technician provides practical, technical and organisational support to staff and students, ensuring that workshops, ICT facilities, equipment and resources are prepared, maintained and available to support high-quality teaching and learning.

Key Responsibilities:

Workshop, Laboratory and Resource Preparation

  1. Prepare DT workshops, ICT rooms and specialist teaching spaces for lessons.
  2. Set up and organise tools, machinery, materials, components, consumables and PPE.
  3. Prepare resources for practical projects, coursework, assessments, exhibitions and examinations.
  4. Maintain organised, safe and productive learning environments.
  5. Create, label, store and manage student work and departmental resources.
  6. Prepare and manage CAD/CAM resources, including 3D printing, laser cutting and CNC manufacture.

Technical and Curriculum Support

  1. Support teachers and students during practical and digital lessons.
  2. Demonstrate safe use of equipment, tools, machinery and software where appropriate.
  3. Assist students with practical manufacturing, electronics, prototyping, coding and digital design activities.
  4. Support troubleshooting and problem-solving during lessons.
  5. Assist with coursework, project work, assessments and exhibitions.
  6. Support the delivery of Design & Technology, Electronics, Product Design, Computing and ICT programmes.

ICT and Digital Systems Support

  1. Prepare and maintain computers, laptops, tablets, printers and other classroom technology.
  2. Support users with software, hardware, login, connectivity and printing issues.
  3. Install, update and test approved software as required.
  4. Support the effective use of digital learning platforms and specialist curriculum software.
  5. Liaise with the IT department regarding more complex technical issues.

Equipment, Maintenance and Stock Management

  1. Maintain DT machinery, tools, ICT equipment and specialist resources in safe working order.
  2. Carry out routine checks, cleaning, calibration and basic maintenance.
  3. Report faults and arrange repairs where necessary.
  4. Maintain inventories, asset registers and stock records.
  5. Monitor stock levels and support purchasing, ordering and resource planning.
  6. Receive, check and store deliveries appropriately.

Health, Safety and Compliance

  1. Promote and maintain high standards of health, safety and safeguarding.
  2. Ensure safe working practices are followed in workshops, ICT rooms and practical learning environments.
  3. Support risk assessments and safety procedures.
  4. Monitor safe use of equipment and intervene when necessary.
  5. Report hazards, incidents, equipment faults and safeguarding concerns promptly.
  6. Ensure compliance with school policies and relevant health and safety guidance.

Professional Responsibilities

  1. Work collaboratively with teachers, support staff and external providers.
  2. Maintain accurate records and documentation.
  3. Attend relevant training and professional development.
  4. Keep up to date with developments in DT, ICT and educational technology.
  5. Contribute positively to the ethos and wider life of the school.

Person Specification:

Essential

  1. Experience working in a Design & Technology, ICT or technical support environment.
  2. Good practical knowledge of workshop tools, machinery and materials.
  3. Experience supporting ICT hardware, software and classroom technology.
  4. Knowledge of CAD/CAM technologies, including 3D printing and laser cutting.
  5. Strong organisational and administrative skills.
  6. Ability to maintain accurate records and manage stock effectively.
