Carpenter and Woodworking Instructor
The Makers Society
Description
At The Makers Society, teaching is as important as building. We believe craft skills should be passed on, not hoarded — and that a good teacher makes the difference between a student who is inspired and one who never comes back.
We're looking for a skilled woodworker who loves sharing what they know. Someone who can hold a class of beginners with the same confidence they hold a hand plane. If that's you, we want to meet you.
About the Role
As Woodworking Instructor, you'll teach our scheduled courses — from one-off Trial Classes and Kids Academy sessions to our longer Modular Courses and residential programmes. When the teaching schedule allows, you'll also work on custom builds and workshop projects assigned by the founder. You'll be a visible part of what makes TMS special: an expert who loves their craft and enjoys teaching it.
What You'll Do
- Deliver woodworking courses across skill levels: Trial Classes, Modular Courses, and specialist workshops
- Teach Kids Academy sessions for children aged 6–14 — patience and positive energy are essential
- Guide students through hand tool and machine work safely and clearly, adapting to different learning speeds
- Complete custom woodworking projects and workshop builds as assigned
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organised workshop at all times — this is non-negotiable
- Carry out daily machine checks and assist with basic maintenance
- Support the development of new course content and teaching materials in collaboration with the founder
- Represent TMS's values in every interaction: warm, expert, and honest
What We're Looking For
- Solid hands-on woodworking ability across hand tools AND power tools / machinery — this is a hard requirement
- Teaching or training experience in any practical skill — you must be able to explain clearly and read a room
- Currently based in the UAE with a valid UAE residence visa
- Safety-first mindset: you naturally enforce safe behaviour around machinery without being told to
- Strong spoken English — you'll be teaching in English
- Genuine passion for craft and the ability to make that passion infectious
- Comfortable working weekends; our courses run Saturday and Sunday
What We're Not Looking For
Site carpenters or fit-out specialists who only work with power tools. This role requires fluency with hand tools: chisels, hand planes, hand saws, marking gauges. If you have never sharpened a chisel, this is probably not the right fit.
Nice to Have
- Formal teaching, vocational training, or instructional qualification
- Experience teaching children or young people
- Furniture-making, joinery, or cabinetry background
- Knowledge of premium hand tool brands (Narex, Kakuri, Luban, Kinex)
- Arabic language skills (useful but not required)
What We Offer
- AED 4,000–6,000 per month base salary, depending on experience
- Training compensation on top of base salary for each course session you teach
- Employment visa provided for eligible candidates not already on a transferable visa
- Health insurance as required by UAE law
- Staff access to the workshop, tools, and equipment outside working hours
- A well-equipped workshop with quality machinery and hand tools from brands we distribute
- A small team where your skills are genuinely valued, not just deployed
