JOB DESCRIPTION

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the technical maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, and reliability of all mechanical systems across the Kanad Hospital campus. Reporting directly to the Head of Engineering Department, this role provides hands-on engineering leadership for HVAC, chiller plant, plumbing, medical gas, and fire/life safety mechanical systems, while supervising assigned technicians and supporting Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority (ADCDA) compliance obligations. The role is purely mechanical in scope; electrical systems are the remit of the Electrical Engineer.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

HVAC and Mechanical Plant

  • Execute and oversee planned preventive maintenance (PPM) and reactive/corrective maintenance on all HVAC systems including air handling units (AHUs), fan coil units (FCUs), ventilation and exhaust systems, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, motors, and associated pipework and controls.
  • Maintain pressure relationships and air change rates in critical clinical areas — operating theatres, isolation rooms, ICU, sterile services, and pharmacy — in line with DOH Abu Dhabi and applicable ASHRAE/CIBSE healthcare standards.
  • Monitor mechanical plant performance via the BMS, respond to alarms promptly, and escalate unresolved faults to the Director of Facilities.
  • Carry out filter replacements, coil cleaning, drain pan maintenance, belt and drive inspections, and air balancing as scheduled; coordinate with Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) before undertaking works in sensitive clinical areas.

Plumbing and Water Hygiene

  • Maintain domestic hot and cold water systems, booster pump sets, calorifiers, water storage tanks, and all sanitary installations across the hospital campus including guest accommodation and ancillary buildings.
  • Implement the hospital's Legionella control plan: weekly temperature checks on sentinel outlets, monthly flushing of low-use outlets, quarterly TMV servicing, annual risk assessment support, and coordination of water sampling with the approved laboratory.
  • Respond promptly to plumbing leaks, drain blockages, and water supply failures to minimise risk to patient-care environments.

Medical Gas Pipeline Systems (MGPS)

  • Monitor MGPS installations covering oxygen, medical air, nitrous oxide, vacuum (WAGD/AGSS), and zone valve boxes; respond to area alarm panel activations immediately and notify clinical staff and the Director of Facilities.
  • Support periodic testing, inspection, and maintenance of MGPS carried out by ADCDA-approved specialist contractors, ensuring correct isolation, access, and post-work verification before systems are returned to service.
  • Maintain MGPS logbooks, alarm response records, and test certificates in the CMMS; never carry out MGPS repair work without the appropriate competency authorization and permit.

Fire and Life Safety — Mechanical Systems

  • Maintain, test, and inspect all mechanically-served fire and life safety systems within scope: fire dampers, smoke control and pressurization systems, kitchen suppression systems, gas suppression systems, and wet/dry risers — in line with ADCDA requirements and the hospital's fire safety plan.
  • Prepare and maintain fire damper and smoke control test records, remediation logs, and inspection certificates required for ADCDA annual inspections and JCI/DOH accreditation surveys.
  • Participate in fire drills, evacuation exercises, and ADCDA inspection visits; accompany inspectors as the mechanical systems technical point of contact and ensure all findings are logged and remediated within the prescribed timescales.
  • Raise immediate alerts to the Director of Facilities and clinical staff for any fire or life safety defect that cannot be immediately rectified; implement interim risk controls and maintain the defect log until permanent repair is confirmed.

Team Supervision

  • Directly supervise assigned mecha
