We're part of the startup hub at the HU Berlin incubator: a building full of small teams building ambitious things from zero. Our team is small and agile, decisions happen fast, and there's no layer between you and the product. The role

We're moving from "it works" to "it works under load, for real users, without burning money." You'll own that transition. Your job is to make our backend stable, scalable, observable, and cost-efficient as usage grows — especially around our AI/LLM-based pipelines.

What you'll do

• Build and evolve systems so they stay stable under load and can be extended sensibly as the product grows
• Run the backend under realistic conditions: APIs, workers, task queues, Redis, databases, caching, and asynchronous processing
• Own deployment and infrastructure: Docker, cloud infrastructure, CI/CD — ideally with Kubernetes or comparable setups
• Keep performance and costs under control: understand early which processes get expensive at scale, where caching pays off, and how to avoid unnecessary spend as usage grows — this matters a lot with LLM-based systems
• Build the feedback loops that make all of this possible: logging, monitoring, tests, and benchmarks. Not just noticing that something is slow or unstable, but finding out why

What we're looking for

• Hands-on experience running backend systems in production, not just building them
• Solid understanding of async architectures: workers, queues, caching layers, database performance
• Experience with Docker, cloud infrastructure, and CI/CD pipelines; Kubernetes (or similar) is a plus
• A debugging mindset: you dig until you find the root cause
• Awareness of cost dynamics in AI/LLM systems, or the curiosity to build it fast

The conditions (please read before applying)

• Start date: 01.08.2026, full-time. This is fixed and not flexible.
• The position is funded through the Berlin Startup Scholarship : €2,500/month per person
• You must be registered in Berlin (Anmeldung) and have fully cleared visa/work status in Berlin at the time of application
